FAQ

Need a New Wi-Fi Router or Mesh on the Cheap? Here's How to Know You're Getting a Good Deal...

Our resident networking expert Tom Brant has been covering and testing tech professionally since 2015 and Wi-Fi routers are right in his wheelhouse.

Know your home. If you have fewer than 20 connected devices in under 2,000 square feet, most Wi-Fi 6 routers, like the on-sale TP-Link AX1800, will get the job done, even if they have been on sale for several years and are being replaced with Wi-Fi 7 models.

Skip the range extender. Adding a range extender to a failing router is a waste of money, no matter how cheap. You’re best off ignoring those Prime Day deals and saving up for an entry-level mesh system with two nodes. The deal on the Netgear Nighthawk RS90 certainly fits the bill.

Check ethernet port specs and speeds. If you’re planning on using wired backhaul for your new mesh system or you pay for a 1Gbps or greater internet plan for your ISP, you’re going to need at least a 2.5Gbps WAN port, and ideally also 2.5Gbps LAN ports to shuttle backhaul traffic between nodes. That also means expanding your budget. So go ahead and give the Deco 7 Pro BE14000 Mesh System, 2-Pack a longer look.

Account for optional extras like subscription costs. Nearly every router manufacturer offers optional subscriptions for security features, parental controls, VPNs, and other nice-to-haves. However, some manufacturers include basic versions of these software features at no extra cost. The Asus ROG Rapture GT6 AX10000, for example, offers a free lifetime subscription to Trend Micro's AiProtection and Asus Instant Guard. That’s why it pays to read our reviews of any mesh system, router, or range extender to find out what’s included and what you might want to pay extra for.

Check historical pricing. Networking equipment is almost always on sale. I always check CamelCamelCamel to see what pricing changes have occurred recently so I know if the Prime Day sale is really a good deal or not.
