As Ontario Soccer marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, its partnership with Indigenous Sport and Wellness Ontario demonstrates how collaboration, inclusion, and meaningful opportunities can help create lasting pathways for Indigenous youth and athletes across the province.

Play. Inspire. Unite.

September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to honour Indigenous Survivors, their families, and communities, while reflecting on the ongoing journey toward reconciliation in Canada.

For Ontario Soccer, reconciliation is not only about reflection; it is also about action. Through meaningful partnerships and a commitment to creating inclusive opportunities, the sport can serve as a powerful platform for connection, growth, and shared learning.

Earlier this year, Ontario Soccer welcomed Indigenous Sport and Wellness Ontario (ISWO) as an associate Member, formalizing a partnership focused on supporting the Indigenous participation and development within the game. Together, our organizations are working to create dedicated Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) pathways that help Indigenous youth and athletes access opportunities at every stage of their soccer journey.

This partnership reflects a shared belief that sport can contribute to healthier communities, stronger relationships, and more inclusive environments where all participants feel welcomed, valued, and supported.

"True reconciliation in sport means actively dismantling barriers and creating sustainable pathways where Indigenous youth can thrive," said Zach Fraleigh-Whiteye, Senior Manager of Sport & Wellness for ISWO. "Our partnership with Ontario Soccer is a direct reflection of TRC Call to Action #89 in action, embedding physical activity as a pillar of community health and well-being while building systemic capacity and inclusive coaching and athlete pathways from the grassroots to high performance."

By working together, Ontario Soccer and ISWO aim to increase access to the game, support athlete and coach development opportunities, and promote education and understanding throughout the soccer community. These efforts are part of a broader commitment to ensuring the sport is accessible and welcoming to participants from all backgrounds.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation serves as an important reminder that reconciliation is an ongoing process. It requires listening, learning, relationship-building, and meaningful action. Through partnerships like this one, Ontario Soccer and ISWO are committed to creating positive outcomes that extend beyond the pitch and into communities across Ontario.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Ontario Soccer encourages all members of the soccer community to take time to learn, reflect, and engage with Indigenous voices, histories, and perspectives while working together to build a more inclusive future for the game.
