How can local newsrooms strengthen their digital strategies and connect with new audiences in an evolving media landscape? At the 8th edition of the Local News Festival in Nantes, the Google News Initiative supported local and regional journalism in France by sponsoring the event and hosting three sessions focused on fostering reader engagement and retention: 📈 Publisher-Creator Synergies Ouest Médialab published a first-of-a-kind study on local content creators. 78% of local media view content creators as an opportunity to reach new audiences. Two-thirds of the content creators surveyed are active on YouTube. 📺 YouTube as a strong platform for Local News Delphine Vialanet (Deputy Director - Regional and Local Programming, France Télévisions) shared France Télévisions regional "streaming-first" transition, which will soon include broadcasting 24 regional editions twice a day and 365 days a year live on YouTube. Additionally, Dario Savary (20 Minutes) explained how they restructured their newsroom to build a profitable YouTube-first video desk. 🔍 New Search Tools for the AI Era Google led a practical product workshop on how Preferred Sources and Subscription Linking (which increases reader subscription engagement) allow for new user engagement strategies on Search, helping local brands protect and grow reader revenue within Google interfaces. A huge thank you to Ouest Medialab, France Télévisions, 20 Minutes France, Delphine Vialanet, Dario Savary, Julien Kostrèche, Jimmy Darras and all local and regional French publishing partners for a fantastic event! As user preferences evolve, the media landscape continues to shift, and technology advances, our work with news partners is more meaningful than ever. Over 400 publications worldwide are now participating in our News AI pilot licensing program where we pay for the delivery and use of enhanced content to help us build new AI experiences together. Alongside these commercial partnerships, we’re continually updating Search to help people discover and dive deeper into high-quality reporting and content from sources they love. Today, we’re rolling out several updates to AI Overviews and AI Mode, including: ▪ 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Highlighting timely topics and prioritizing your Preferred Sources (the number of people using Preferred Sources to select sites they want to hear more from has grown 7x since the beginning of the year). ▪ 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗸𝘀: We've made substantial increases to inline links in our AI experiences, and they appear higher up in responses more often. ▪ 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗸𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀: New prominent links to related articles at the end of AI responses. ▪ 𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Testing clickable publisher and creator names in video results to help users explore more creator content. ▪ 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗲: Prominently surfacing 1-2 key links for specific tasks or info at the top of AI responses. We remain committed to engaging and collaborating with publishers and creators as we navigate these changes together. 17 Oregon-based news leaders gathered in Portland for the in-person convening of our Google News Initiative State News Sustainability Accelerator. Hosted in partnership with the Agora Journalism Center at the University of Oregon, the gathering focused on the practical realities of local publishing. Discussions centered on the data, digital products and tools publishers are using to grow audiences and diversify revenue. Coaches from Blue Engine Collaborative led the day's programming, delivering individual analytics assessments, running live audits, and working through each newsroom's specific challenges in the room. Program alumni from the Santa Fe New Mexican and the Summit Daily News shared candid insights into what worked for them afterward, from launching new digital products to driving audience growth and diversifying subscription models. We are proud to partner with, Agora Journalism Center at the University of Oregon and ForJournalism (FORJ), and to the Blue Engine Collaborative coaching team for designing and leading the day. TORONTO, Sept. 1, 2026 /CNW/ The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) today announced the cohort for the Emerging News Voices Program. The six-month training and capacity-building program is designed to empower independent online news creators and lean digital news startups to establish sustainable frameworks for online reporting, audience growth and diverse revenue streams. The program, with support from the Google News Initiative, received 54 applications from news creators and news organizations across the country. From this highly competitive pool, 20 creator-journalists and media organizations were selected. The cohort represents the quality and diversity of Canada's creator-led journalism outlets, including independent digital publications, non-profit investigative journalism units, hyperlocal newsrooms, independent creator-journalists and topic-specialized publications. Created for emerging Canadian news content creators, the CJF program consists of virtual workshops with industry experts, peer learning, as well as coaching sessions wherein participants benefit from real-world knowledge designed to help them expand their existing audiences and platforms. “Coming off the success of last year's NextGen Creator-Journalist program, we have seen firsthand the impact digital news creators have on the wider Canadian journalism ecosystem," says Natalie Turvey, president and executive director of the CJF. "I'm looking forward to seeing how they scale their organizations and reach their communities in innovative ways." Participants who successfully complete the program are eligible for up to $5,000 to support projects that grow audiences, diversify revenue, or integrate AI products and other digital tools into their workflows. "At the Google News Initiative, we are committed to empowering the next generation of journalists,” says Cristina Y. Caballero B., news partner manager at Google Canada. “By supporting the CJF Emerging News Voices Program, we aim to provide independent creators with the digital tools and business strategies they need to build sustainable news platforms and continue delivering high quality information to Canadians." Adds Jeff Elgie, CJF co-chair and CEO of Village Media: "Independent creators and local outlets are driving some of the most dynamic, impactful journalism in Canada today. Through this program, the CJF is helping ensure these newsrooms don't just survive, but build the business frameworks and digital tools needed to thrive over the long term."
