The Walt Disney Company is laying off a few hundred employees across multiple departments, Variety has confirmed. The layoffs, the third round this year under recently appointed CEO Josh D’Amaro, are primarily in Disney’s human resources and IT departments, according to a source familiar with the cuts. https://lnkd.in/gqp2RPYg
On their website they’re hiring for these roles - lil confusing
The perpetual merry-go-round of layoffs, restructures, right-sizing, or whatever else one wishes to call it, in the world of leading parks comes down to sloppy planning (not very likely here), an unforeseeable major event, or the straightforward choice by the Board and very senior leadership to perpetuate the cycle and twist out more profits on the backs of dedicated employees who, in many cases, do not even make a living wage. It’s abhorrent. There is zero excuse for it, which I suppose is why there is precious little attempt to offer one.
Disney decides to raise the price on Disney+ and goes off to do another round of layoffs. Maybe if the people in the C-Suites took a pay cut it will be okay.
They just made a ton of money off a movie from 2019. Line's got to go up as much as it possibly can, I guess.
HR and IT specifically being the targets both this round and in July is worth noticing, those are usually the departments that absorb the operational load of every previous round, processing the paperwork, closing accounts, rebuilding systems for a smaller headcount. Cutting the people who handled the last round right before what looks like it could need another one is a strange kind of timing, whether intentional or not.
I am sad to know this is happening. I’ve known many people with the Disney organization and they’ve always been so wonderful to us and so supportive of everything that we do we’re all Beverly Hills publishing we’ve always gone publicity for the parks as well as the studio and part of that I was the marketing in public relations Director Hollywood reporter when we were a daily newspaper at 6715 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood I hope that all the people and that are laid off will find other jobs because they are so qualified and so beautifully trained through the Disney way of doing things I’m hoping for the best for everyone thank you for allowing me to express my opinion. Have a beautiful magical day.
This is hard to watch for consultants as well as employees who work for Disney, jobs can be cut at any time, and growth is primarily focused on sustainability. As a project expert backfilling for roles has become part of the norm. There are a lot of politics impacting the decision process as nobody wants blame. That’s what people like myself are now for, taking the blame and risk off others versus driving technology initiatives. When asked why I won’t convert to an employee role, articles like this one remind me why brand loyalty is harder to commit too. I love the Disney culture but the rapid changes have torn holes. Like most Fortune 500 Sr staff are retiring early, leaders exiting to competition and people with 15+ years experience are becoming targets even if highly skilled. Recruitment and HR is even being chopped leading to poor onboarding, training, poor selection processes and training gaps. Often employees struggle to get the tools they need or access in today’s environments.
Tough news to read. Thoughts are with all the impacted employees across HR, IT, and other affected teams during this transition. Hoping everyone affected lands on their feet quickly.
I am sad to see this continuation of layoffs. The leadership needs to do this in one swift move. The continuation of rolling out layoffs is poison for moral. It is poison for productivity as people walk around focussed on their careers and not the work.
