ShinyHunters is a notorious cybercriminal group that specializes in large scale data theft and extortion. On its dark web leak site, it put out a claim saying it stole "sensitive data on almost all FBI agents, and everyone who's ever filed a job application with the FBI." 404 Media was the first to report on this, they got a sample of the stolen data, which included names, home addresses, and phone numbers of FBI agents and their spouses and they matched a portion of it against public records to confirm it's real. So how'd they get in? According to reports, the hackers first broke into an Oracle PeopleSoft server, the kind HR and recruiters typically use to store job applicants' personal info, then moved laterally from there and hacked into a storage hosted on Amazon's government cloud, which held the agents' and applicants' data. The hackers say they took several terabytes of data. What's more interesting is the motive this time. ShinyHunters explicitly said this "isn't about money" 🤨 What they're demanding is that the FBI take down a report they claim contains "false allegations" about the group. To apply pressure, they also hacked the FBI's jobs site, which at one point showed a "currently down for maintenance" message, and even the special agent application portal was knocked offline. At the end of the day, this is a wake up call for everyone, whether you're a government, a company, or an individual: in the digital world, once your data gets digitized and put online, it's permanently at risk of being stolen, and how high that risk runs depends on how sensitive the data is. And I’ll admit, I also enjoy the little sense of accomplishment that comes with acing one of the quizzes. 😄 For anyone who likes games, challenges, or checking that “completed” box, there is something surprisingly satisfying about knowing you caught every red flag. Of course, now that I work for an IT company, there may be a little extra pressure involved. 😂 I was already taking cybersecurity seriously, but these days I am especially determined not to be the person who misses the phishing test. I have no desire to face Jay’s disappointment—or give anyone reason to question whether I should still have access to anything. 😉 All joking aside, that little bit of accountability is part of why regular training works. It keeps the risks—and the right behaviors—top of mind. Pause before clicking. Look closely at the sender. Question something that feels unusual. Verify requests through a trusted method. No training platform can eliminate every threat, but giving employees regular education, reinforcement, and visibility into their progress can make a meaningful difference.
