These days, most engineers understand the benefits of migrating to IP networks for audio and video transport, writes Tieline's Jacob Daniluck. But he says many engineers still ask about Networked Media Open Specifications (NMOS) and Ember+ and how these protocols can be used to manage and monitor codec functions and AES67, ST 2110-30 and ST 2022-7 IP streams. His commentary, an excerpt from our ebook on trends in codecs, explores some of the many benefits of NMOS and Ember+. https://lnkd.in/eBVBt5gm #Codecs #AudioTech #Media #RadioEngineering #Tieline #AoIP

Tieline will debut its ViA Duo codec at the NAB Show. The company says it bridges a gap between field reporting and commentary. "It operates as an IP codec or AoIP commentary node, or facilitates off-tube broadcasting through support for audio and a video feed." https://lnkd.in/e2zxKzge #AoIP #Codecs #Remote #Broadcasting #Radio #RadioEngineering #NABShow #Tech #AudioTech

What's the most important trend in the design or use of codecs for radio broadcasting? "Hands down, it’s path redundancy," Robbie Green told me. "To ensure 100% uptime, you need to send your critical audio across more than one path. The good news is IP path redundancy is very cost-effective these days. You could pair two different wired ISPs, or an ISP and a low-cost IP radio option. As long as one link remains up, you are still on the air." Robbie is one of the experts who took my questions for the latest Radio World ebook, which you can access here: https://lnkd.in/ePcXPjhn

Shaking his Magic 8 Ball, Cris Alexander writes that the words “more virtualization” appear in the window. But for broadcast environments, Alexander says, when you stop and think about it, the possibilities are just about endless for virtualization. https://lnkd.in/e6UjK3TK #RadioEngineering #AudioTech #AoIP #Radio #Software #Automation #Engineering #Telos #VoIP

How to optimize your radio air chain? Start with good, uncompressed audio files, even for your ads … Don’t compress unnecessarily … Get your metadata straightened out … Consider middleware to insert other messaging if your automation system cannot do it natively … Double confirm your Pi codes for each of your signals … Make sure your PPM encoder has enough audio to attach the watermark, because it cannot put the watermark on silence. Those are just some of the tips I heard from Bud Williamson, a broadcast entrepreneur, engineer and consultant. He and 11 other engineers, consultants and supplier sponsors took my questions and shared their expertise in the new Radio World ebook “Optimize Your Air Chain.” Good stuff here: https://lnkd.in/eSfjVZKD

The development of Advanced Audio Coding – or AAC – was a real team effort, delivering higher compression ratios and better playback quality than MP3. But it’s still not perfect. Here’s how it works and where it sits within the broader MPEG audio standards landscape. https://hubs.li/Q04p7ZkF0 #BroadcastStandards #Broadcast Audio #ProAudio #Broadcasting #AudioEngineeringSociety #AES #MPEG #AAC #MP3
