Meeting Mass-Market Customer Needs in 2026–2027: Critical Business Challenges and Integrated Solutions Author: Dr. Rijal Abd Shukor Affiliation: Independent Scholar amp; Industry Advisor, Kedah, Malaysia Date: September 2026 Abstract: As global and regional consumer markets evolve through sustained inflation, rapid digital transformation, and rising ethical expectations, businesses face a fundamental paradox: how to deliver personalized, sustainable, transparent, and inclusive value at scale without pricing mass-market consumers out. This article identifies seven pressing, interconnected challenges defining the current business landscape—affordability under cost pressure, mass personalization with operational efficiency, trust and transparency deficits, supply chain resilience with sustainable fulfillment, accessibility and inclusivity gaps, responsible AI and data governance, and circularity at commercial scale. Drawing on 2024–2026 consumer surveys, industry benchmarks, and emerging frameworks, this study provides actionable, sector-agnostic solutions for each challenge, with particular attention to ASEAN and Malaysian market dynamics. The findings demonstrate that siloed approaches fail; instead, integrated systems leveraging modular design, AI-driven demand management, blockchain-verified provenance, and localized value chains enable businesses to serve broad markets profitably while aligning with evolving customer expectations. 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲 Technology can be purchased, but the right behaviour, business understanding, and decision-making mindset cannot be installed like software. Successful digital transformation depends on how well people understand processes, risks, business priorities, and compliance expectations. 👉Behaviour matters : Resistance to change, silo thinking, and delayed decisions can slow down even the best digital initiatives. 👉Background matters : Combining IT, operations, Quality, engineering, and regulatory knowledge helps create solutions that work in real business environments. 👉Logical thinking matters : Automating a broken process only accelerates inefficiency.Simplify and standardise before digitising. 👉Business value matters : Every initiative should have measurable KPIs linked to productivity, right-first-time performance, cycle time, compliance, and ROI. 👉Speed matters. : Delayed milestones can mean delayed benefits, increased costs, and missed competitive opportunities. 💎McKinsey research has highlighted gaps in digital KPI awareness among surveyed pharmaceutical executives, reinforcing the importance of measurable business outcomes. 💎McKinsey has discussed focused digital infrastructure approaches capable of delivering in 3–6 months , compared with 3–4 years for traditional approaches in the specific context studied. Alignment over priorities, sound decisions, and disciplined execution can accelerate transformation. In regulated environments, speed must never compromise data integrity, risk-based validation, auditability, compliance, or patient safety. Early collaboration between IT, business teams, Quality, and end users helps identify risks and reduce rework. Clear ownership, faster decisions, simpler processes, and measurable outcomes are essential for sustainable execution. A project delay is not merely a missed deadline; it can also delay business value, productivity gains, and competitive advantage.Build the right mindset, align people, simplify processes, measure outcomes, and scale technology responsibly. #DigitalTransformation #DigitalManufacturing #DigitalQuality #OperationalExcellence #BusinessValue #Leadership

Pleased to be speaking at the Sabah Digital Summit 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 on a subject central to my current work: 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. Strategy defines an organisation’s ambitions. Enterprise Capability Architecture addresses a more fundamental question: 𝘿𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙧𝙜𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙨𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙖𝙢𝙗𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙤 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮? In an era of AI and accelerating digital transformation, technology investment alone does not guarantee organisational performance. The real challenge is designing the ability to continuously sense, build, deploy and renew the capabilities needed to execute strategy. At the summit, I look forward to exploring how this discipline can help organisations bridge the gap between strategic ambition and execution, strengthen adaptability and create sustainable value. 📅 𝟮𝟱–𝟮𝟲 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 📍 𝗦𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲, 𝗞𝗼𝘁𝗮 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗹𝘂, 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗮 #SabahDigitalSummit2026 #EnterpriseCapabilityArchitecture #StrategyExecution #WorkforceIntelligence #DigitalTransformation

𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲: 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 As business expands, Supply chain operations becomes more complex. More customers, more orders, more routes, more data, and more pressure to deliver faster and at lower cost. This is where technology becomes more than just a support tool. It becomes an enabler of better decisions. Here are five areas where technology can transform supply chain operations: 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: Real-time tracking helps businesses know where shipments are, what stage they are in, and where delays are happening. 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: Digital systems and dashboards turn daily operations into measurable KPIs, from delivery performance and fleet utilization to turnaround time and cost. 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬: Technology can reduce manual work, automate repetitive activities, eliminate information gaps, and make processes faster and more consistent. 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤: Data helps identify demand changes, seasonality, capacity constraints, recurring delays, and potential disruptions before they become bigger problems. 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: Customers want availability, accuracy, visibility, and reliability. Technology helps businesses deliver all four. The real transformation happens when we move from: Visibility to Measurement to Insight to Action to Continuous Improvement. Technology doesn't transform supply chains by itself, people using better information to make better decisions do. Remember, what you cannot see you cannot measure. And what you cannot measure you struggle to improve. 👍

Winning procurement strategies are no longer just about sourcing better. They are about designing the organisation better. That was my main takeaway from Zug 2026 – Winning Strategies, which I attended as Co-Founder of HAYABI Consulting. The evening focused on Value Chain Configuration and Workforce Development, but the broader message was clear: Procurement and supply chain are moving closer to the centre of business strategy. The presentations from Barbara Stolle-Amedick of Hitachi Energy and Frederik Schleier of Roche showed this from two very different perspectives. At Hitachi Energy, one point stood out: resilience is not simply about having another supplier. It requires long-term capacity planning, strategic supplier partnerships, and the ability to balance security of supply, sustainability and affordability. That strongly resonates with my own experience. In complex and regulated environments, supplier management is part of risk management and organisational resilience. The Roche perspective added another dimension: AI-enabled procurement transformation. What I found particularly important was that the discussion did not start with AI tools. It started with data, operating model and governance. The examples included contract management, procurement data platforms and AI-supported negotiation preparation. But the foundations were the same: validated data, clear governance, user adoption and scalable systems. For me, this is critical. Technology does not fix weak processes. And AI does not turn poor procurement data into reliable intelligence. Good technology amplifies good foundations. The workforce discussion was equally relevant. Future procurement professionals will need more than category knowledge or process expertise. We will need to understand data, challenge technology, manage supplier ecosystems, influence stakeholders and make decisions where efficiency, risk and governance intersect. I also greatly valued the opportunity to exchange perspectives with procurement and supply-chain professionals from different industries. Thank you to Economic Promotion Canton of Zug, CIPS Switzerland 🇨🇭 , CSCMP Roundtable Switzerland, the organisers, speakers and panellists for such a strong professional forum. I left Zug with one question: Are we transforming procurement by adding technology or redesigning procurement so that technology, people, data and supplier relationships create better decisions together? #Procurement #SupplyChain #ProcurementTransformation #AI
