Fun chat with Benjamin Chipman at LinkedIn HQ about the questions GenZ has about networking but can be afraid to ask...

GenZ in the workplace this, GenZ in the workplace that.  LinkedIn saw that everyone had so much to say about how we as GenZ show up in the workplace that they invited me out to headquarters in Mountain View, CA to ask the questions to the man in charge-- CEO Daniel Shapero.  Dan and I got to talk honestly about what’s happening with early career opportunities and how to create experiences for yourself in a changing work climate.  We also talked about the elephant in the room… what AI means for professionals navigating their first jobs.  The biggest takeaways I’m leaving with? 1️⃣ Be generous with your experience. ⏩ Share your learnings and what it took for you to get there. That doesn't have to mean posting if you’re not ready for that. Comment and engage to maintain your connections and celebrate wins alongside others.  2️⃣ ”Connectionmaxxing” (as the Gen Alphas are calling it) doesn’t do much for ya in terms of creating opportunity. Those 500+ connections should be people you’ve actually engaged with, not just strangers on the internet. ⏩ Cultivating meaningful relationships will always bring you more value than spray-and-pray connecting.  3️⃣ There are fewer entry level jobs, we’re not imagining that… but the data suggest it’s not necessarily AI’s fault. Interest rates are actually the more likely culprit.  ⏩ Standing out obviously matters more than ever, but using AI to apply for more jobs isn’t the solution. What is working, is investing in the human relationships that undergird every employment decision.  Can’t wait to share the full interview with you soon 😀 #LinkedInPartner #GenZintheWorkplace #Postgrad #EarlyCareer #GenZ

I think we’re all becoming a little “Gen Z” to keep up with the future. AI + new tech + Gen Z mindset + our learned experience = a new vibe. Maybe success in work and life will be about how well we mix all four. 😊 Thank you for giving us new insights on current topics Daniel Shapero

The useful distinction is between adapting communication norms and lowering performance standards—good managers should do the former without abandoning the latter.

Great advice! and, you can be amazed by how often people will help out. You could write to them, explain your situation, ask for advice or help, and you’ll be surprised how many times people say yes. Generally I think people want to be helpful. It can be tricky for the recipient to sift through spam, sales and calls for help and advice, this can be a challenge, which is why usually people wait to be introduced. But you don’t have to! I regularly post that I’m open to helping people out - with advice, connections, whatever. Very few do. But they should!

Love this. In a world where AI makes it easier to do more, faster, our real differentiator may be deeply human: meaningful relationships, curiosity, generosity, and trust. And “be generous with your experience” is such a powerful reminder. We have so much to learn from each other across generations.

An important conversation, Dan. Gen Z is not simply entering the workplace with different expectations — they are entering a workplace that is itself being fundamentally transformed. The opportunity is to move beyond asking, “How do we adapt Gen Z to the workplace?” and also ask, “How do we redesign the workplace to unlock the strengths of a new generation?” Skills, purpose, visibility, mentorship and access to meaningful opportunities will all play a major role. The companies that understand this early will have a real advantage in attracting and developing the next generation of talent. Great discussion. 👏
