How can young people navigate an online world where misinformation spreads faster than ever? 🌐 Across Central and Southeastern Europe, young audiences are confronted with a constant stream of misleading and false information online. Reaching them with topics that matter to them, in their own language and on the platforms they use, is more important than ever. ✅ With #DWfactattack, DW's Fact Check team and DW's Romanian and Hungarian services are working together to strengthen media literacy among young audiences. Through short, engaging videos, young hosts in Romania and Hungary investigate claims circulating online, explain fact-checking methods, and help their peers develop a critical approach to information. How do we make that work across languages and countries? Joscha Weber, Head of DW Fact Check, and Aida Sofić Salihbegović, Coordinating editor, DW Programs for Europe, introduce the initiative and discuss how Fact Attack empowers young people to navigate today's information landscape with confidence. ➡️ You can find the fact checks on TikTok (DW Romana) and Facebook (DW Magyar).

Automated moderation reads Nigerian Pidgin as English. So a Pidgin post with a false claim about polling units goes through a filter that thinks it understood the thing, finds nothing wrong, and passes it on. Nobody checks it after that. Yoruba has a version of the same problem, because the diacritics carrying its tone usually get stripped before anything reads the text. Closing the Indigenous-Language Detection Gap, our new policy brief, goes to the people who can fix this: Meta, Google, TikTok and X, plus NCC, NITDA and NDPC. Four asks of the platforms. Surge review capacity in Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Pidgin and Kanuri through the election window, sized against real Nigerian user numbers rather than a global multilingual capability nobody has tested on Nigerian content. Content Credentials on political advertising, in whatever language it runs. A fast review route for accredited Nigerian fact-checkers, working from a standard evidence template. Weekly reporting on what is being enforced here. Two for the regulators. NCC and NITDA to issue an election-period code of practice using mandates they already hold. NDPC to check whether people posting in Nigerian languages get the same privacy notices, appeal routes and redress as people posting in English. None of this asks a platform to disclose anything proprietary. There is a business argument as well. DataReportal put Facebook at roughly 38 million Nigerian users in late 2025, with TikTok ad reach up 43.4% year on year. Nigerian users aged 16 and over are on an average of seven platforms a month, up from five in 2024. When something goes visibly wrong on one platform, people move. Ukrainian journalists are a constant source of inspiration. Their commitment to keeping communities informed, under extraordinary pressure, is a reminder of what journalism makes possible. We’re so proud at Fathm to be working with OpenAI, WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers and the Association of Independent Regional Publishers of Ukraine on this programme to support independent journalism in Ukraine. We’re looking forward to supporting their work and learning from the experience and creativity they bring to it.
Really excited to be working on this with the Association of Independent Regional Publishers of Ukraine and WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers https://lnkd.in/eQbb6493

🔎 Reach is becoming an organisational capability. Producing journalism is only half the battle - media groups must also have the talent, tech, and audience expertise to distribute it across fragmented channels. Africa is home to more than 50 countries, each with its own media landscape, languages, and regulatory environment, meaning no single study can capture the full diversity of the continent’s independent digital media sector at once. Organisations have to define their own measure of success, or lack thereof. 💡 Here's what our panellists shared on defining success in a fragile, creator-driven media landscape. SembraMedia leads Project Oasis, with support from the Google News Initiative and Code For Africa (CfA) as a research partner in Africa. 👉🏾 Read the full report for more insights: https://cfa.fyi/iKbUQB2 Marie Ella Kouakou | Wale Lawal | Qaanitah Hunter

Behind the Algorithm: How GhanaMedia.net Engineered a Digital News Revolution ACCRA, GHANA — The blueprint for digital media success in Africa is officially being rewritten, and traditional media houses are scrambling to keep up. For over a decade, the recipe for dominant web traffic in the Ghanaian ecosystem was simple: establish a legacy brand name, build a massive desktop homepage, and wait for the search queries to roll in. But while the old guard rested on its laurels, a silent, hyper-optimized powerhouse was quietly engineering the future of digital journalism right under their noses....

We're very close to completing our annual update of all the state and public media in 170 countries and the latest regional analyses are now out. Here is our Asia analysis. European study coming up in about two weeks and the 2026 global overview, as usual, launched in October. #statemediamonitor #statemedia #publicmedia #government #research #governance
As part of our 2026 State Media Monitor update, we published State and Public Media in Asia where we mapped 111 active state-linked media organisations across 26 Asian jurisdictions. The Asia database contains 125 records in total, including organisations now recorded as closed, merged, inactive or removed from the active scope. A preview: "The most important conclusion from the 2026 Asian cycle is that the sharp decline in the State-Controlled count does not represent a comparable decline in political control."
