Would like to understand a bit better the "refraction" of Sonic Waves. As the speed of Sound (c) increases with air temperature (SAT) increase, the reflection of shock waves in the lower atmosphere seems a bit counter-intuitive. I believe the reality is that an aircraft would NOT create a shock wave at ground level if its flight speed would be subsonic at ground level. As the Temperature drops with altitude (6.5°C/km or 1.98°C/kft) the same actual speed results in higher Mach Numbers at altitude. Consequently the same speed that at ground level would be M0.99, at altitude (say 40kft) would be M1.16. So an aircraft flying at M1.16 at 40kft would not create a shock wave at ground level. This is NOT diffraction. It is fading or decay.
