We'll look at how Technology Business Management (TBM) and FinOps that actually include the mainframe help you model scenarios and compare strategies honestly. There's more to it than what people are taking into account for cost benefit analyis accounting. People are missing are the $ value of risk of it failing. and the value of business objectives, not to mention the impact to the business. This is a complex, and deep topic with so many moving parts. What does it take to get the next generation excited about the mainframe? Start by bringing students into the community. 💙 At #IBMTechXchange, Scott Piersall, Educator and #IBMChampion, shared how he’s helping University of Florida students discover opportunities in the IBM Z ecosystem as part of the Open Mainframe Project’s work to attract and engage the next generation of mainframers. The session explored proven ways to attract students to the mainframe, connect recent graduates with career opportunities, and inspire the next generation to join the community. Several University of Florida students joined Scott onsite to share their experiences and offer a firsthand perspective on what draws them to IBM Z. And the learning didn’t stop at the session! Len Santalucia, The Open Mainframe Project Governing Board Chair and Adjunct professor at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), brought his students to TechXchange to connect with the people and technologies shaping its future. From the classroom to the conference floor, these experiences help students build their network, discover career paths, and see where they fit in the future of mainframe technology. One of the things I love about working in open source is getting to see people grow in the community. I met Junior Tamekem Tadiffo at #IBMTechXchange, and it was such a joy to meet a former The Open Mainframe Project mentee in person! Junior was front row for the keynote and attended most of the Open Mainframe sessions. I loved seeing his enthusiasm and curiosity. Junior’s journey is a great example of what can happen when someone opens a door. An IBM Z Ambassador introduced him to mainframes, he became passionate enough about the technology to become an ambassador himself, and through Open Mainframe’s Mentorship program, he explored the role of mainframes in digital sovereignty and resilience. This is why mentorship matters. It’s not just about learning new technical skills. It’s about having someone invest in you, helping you discover opportunities you might not have known existed, and finding a community where you can keep learning, contributing, and growing. 🌟 (Shoutout to his mentors Bruno A. and Swathi Rao) 🌟 And this is why I love what IBM Z Ambassadors do, too. They help make mainframes fun, approachable, and relevant to a new generation. That first conversation can turn into a passion, a career path, and eventually, someone who inspires the next person. Junior, it was so good to meet you in person! Thank you for your enthusiasm and for being such a great example of what happens when we invest in people and give them opportunities to grow. Two developers with a 32-year age difference walk into a mainframe and have to learn how to work together.... that was the premise of this session at #IBMTechXchange and it was a hit! Thanks to #IBMChampions Armin Kramer and Philipp Kremling from CROZ DACH GmbH for sharing their experiences bridging the generational gap in mainframe development. With several decades of difference, Armin and Philipp brought real-world stories of generational friction, reverse mentoring, and how tools like The Open Mainframe Project's #Zowe and DBB help bring legacy expertise together with modern DevOps practices. As experienced mainframe professionals retire and new talent enters the ecosystem, sharing knowledge across generations has never been more important. #OpenMainframe #opensource
