It could only take ~22 jobs/day to offset what you pay RunsOn to self-host your GitHub Actions runners on AWS... and still save massively! That is if you're running 5 min jobs on a 4 vCPU Linux runner. More volume, longer jobs, more vCPUs only reduce that number. For windows runners, it's even lesser. These costs include: - a yearly licence fee (based on runners/month) - RunsOn control plane on your AWS - EC2 runner compute Not only that, you also get a 30-70% performance bump which reduces the overall minutes further. So you pay even less for far better CI. Check out your break-even point here: https://lnkd.in/gHDsctS9

Can you run GitHub CodeQL code scanning on RunsOn runners? Yes, and there is now a docs page for it. On Fleet, CodeQL default setup can target your fleet directly: pick "Labeled runner" and enter the fleet label (`runs-on/fleet=<name>/env=<env>`). GitHub creates and schedules the scans, so there is no workflow file to maintain. On Flex, use advanced setup with your usual RunsOn label. Default setup is not an option there: GitHub only accepts a runner label if a runner with that label is already registered, and Flex registers runners per job. The page also covers sizing (one job per language, all in parallel) and the gotchas I hit while testing: runner group access, and default setup silently blocking advanced-setup results. https://lnkd.in/eQZEhv2s

FreeCAD is an open-source 3D modelling software written in C++ and takes ~24m to build on a GitHub-hosted ubuntu instance. We got it down to <10m, without touching the cache: We simply optimised the workflow so that the most critical path (the build and the tests) is the only path for the runner to take every time it spawns. Which means: - preinstall the dependencies (which are many in this case) on the runner image - spawn an instance with this runner image and keep it warm runs-on comes with the ability to create a pool of instances suited for needs exactly like this. You can either have instances always running and ready to go, or you can have stopped instances with warmed up EBS volumes, also ready to go. t8i instance types now available on runs-on.com
Oyez oyez, AWS just released the t8i instance type, and it's a winner for smaller CI jobs. Price/Performance ratio is really good! Already available on RunsOn. Oh and if you don't need 4GiB of ram, you can also try the t8i.small or even t8i.micro options for even better saving!

RunsOn can transparently mirror Docker Hub through ECR on Linux. Fewer rate limits, faster repeated pulls, and the cache stays in your AWS account. https://lnkd.in/esdTE6f8
