Four conference days in Freiburg, plenty of ideas for RPACT Code, and some very welcome reunions. At ISCB GMDS 2026, my main focus was AI in statistical practice: how can we make it useful while keeping assumptions, results, and responsibility clear? I’ve shared my highlights, photographs, and takeaways for rpact and RPACT Code on our blog: 👉 https://lnkd.in/ewP_8JB2 Three themes stayed with me: • Guardrails for AI-based sample size tools - especially relevant to our work on RPACT Code. • Reproducible statistical code and the importance of explicit analysis assumptions. • Hallucination detection, and why a confident answer still needs checking. The conversations between sessions were just as valuable. It was lovely to reconnect with my PhD supervisor, Andreas Ziegler, and with Anika Großhennig, Michael Brendel, and Silke Szymczak from our PhD days at IMBS in Lübeck. I also enjoyed catching up with Marcel Wolbers from Bayer, the regular exchanges with Lukas Widmer from Novartis, and meeting Werner Brannath, co-author of the book underpinning rpact. Hearing from people who use rpact in their work is always valuable to me. With Carolin Herrmann, whose methodological work has already contributed to rpact, we renewed our interest in exploring whether we might implement further methods together in the future. I’m heading home with new ideas and questions to explore - and feeling grateful for the people who make these conferences worthwhile. #ISCBGMDS2026 #Biostatistics #ClinicalTrials #AI #rpact

  • We are very pleased to share that #RPACT has received a positive certification from the German Certification Office for the Research Allowance (BSFZ) for research and development activities related to rpact. The assessment recognizes that the underlying work meets key criteria for research and development, including novelty, scientific and technical uncertainty, and a systematic approach. For us, this is an important external acknowledgement of the methodological and technical research that goes into advancing statistical software for clinical research. It also strengthens our commitment to continuously developing rpact as reliable, transparent, and innovative open-source software. We are delighted about this recognition and look forward to bringing the resulting advances into future versions of rpact. More details: https://lnkd.in/eXfMJz8n

  • Daniel will be giving a free #openstatsware workshop on how to build reliable #Rstats packages in #Munich on 13 August 2026 (in person only, no online participation)! Don't miss it! Sign up at the Google form linked in below post.

🥁 New workshop announcement! Topic: Good Software Engineering Practice for R Packages Date: 13 August 2026 Location: Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München Important: No online participation! Only in person! Time: 9.00-16.00 Registration: https://lnkd.in/gAhC-Bmy Costs: None - free! The vast majority of statisticians in academia and industry alike write statistical software daily. Nonetheless, software engineering principles are often neglected in statistics: most statisticians know a programming language (such as R) but lack formal training in writing reusable and reliable code. This course aims to equip participants with the essential software engineering practices required to develop and maintain robust R packages. With the growing demand for reproducible research and the increasing complexity of statistical methods developed for multidimensional data, writing high-quality R packages has become a critical skill for statisticians to prototype, develop, and disseminate novel methods and push their adoption in practice. The course will focus on the key principles of software engineering, such as workflows, modular design, version control, testing, documentation, and quality indicators. Focusing on these aspects ensures the reliability and sustainability of R packages. Participants will learn how to structure their R packages following best practices and making use of tools that streamline the development process. The course will also cover version control using Git, allowing participants to manage code changes effectively and collaborate with others. A significant emphasis will be placed on writing and running unit tests, ensuring that packages are error-free and behave as expected across different environments and over time. Furthermore, the course will cover quality indicators for R packages and explore techniques for writing effective documentation, enabling users to pick, understand, and use statistical software packages effectively. By the end of the course, participants will have a solid understanding of good software engineering principles tailored to R package development, enabling them to build packages that are not only functional but also reliable, reusable, and easy to maintain.
