🔴 WHEN WORKSAFE/SAFEWORK FAILS TO LIVE UP TO THE PROMISE ➡️ October is National Safe Work Month. Across Australia, workers will once again see messages about safe workplaces, prevention, protection & the importance of physical & psychosocial safety. BUT there is ANOTHER SIDE to this conversation that NEEDS TO BE HEARD: 🔴 What happens when the institutions we fund to protect workers FAIL to live up to that promise? ➡️ For me, this is not an abstract policy question. It is personal, documented & ongoing. 🔴 I allege that WorkSafe Tasmania failed to protect me when I sought help concerning escalating psychosocial harm. Harm that began in the workplace (Department for Education, Children & Young People - DECYP) but was mismanaged. Misinformation then spread into a secondary government connected workplace & into government regulators who then failed to protect me due to stigmatisation created by a false narrative being spread internally. 🔴 This is information manipulation & mismanagement. The impression I have is that this was INTENTIONAL & was an attempt by DECYP HR staff to avoid psychosocial liability, ie. it was easier to destroy me that protect me. The rest has been an attempt to cover up this misconduct, ie. again, it was easier to try to destroy me that protect me - even though that protection is a statutory responsibility. 🔴 I am not alone! I am one of many suffering this form of harm in Australia. Some, sadly, are already dead. I have extensive documentary evidence supporting my claims, & WorkSafe Tasmania’s handling of my matter is now part of proceedings I have commenced in the Supreme Court of Tasmania. Those matters remain before the Court. 🔴 But this raises a much bigger public-interest question. Australians collectively spend millions of dollars funding workplace-safety regulators & their paid staff. We do so because these institutions exist for a PURPOSE: to protect people from harm at work & to enforce the laws designed to keep workplaces safe. Their effectiveness cannot be measured simply by legislation, policies, websites, awareness campaigns, glossy graphics or reassuring slogans. ➡️ The real test comes when a worker is actually being harmed & asks for help. In my case, the consequences did not end when I left the workplace. The harm that began there has continued for years and has spread far beyond the original employment environment because I chose to fight for justice. I suspect I have been punished for daring to question the injustice... ➡️ retaliation & escalating harm. 🔴 That is precisely WHY psychosocial safety matters. And it is why, throughout National Safe Work Month 2026, I intend to speak publicly about the gap between the PROMISE of worker protection and the REALITY experienced by some workers who actually seek it. Uncertainty about the future should not delay practical action on frontier AI risks In recent weeks, warnings about the risks posed by the most advanced AI systems have intensified. There is no expert consensus on whether AI poses a long-term existential risk to humanity, and many of the questions involved remain uncertain. But that uncertainty does not leave us powerless to act. In our new report, 'Frontier AI Risks: A practical way forward', we identify five areas where practical action is needed now: cyber security, democratic instability, misalignment, loss of meaningful human control and oversight, and chemical and biological threats. These risks involve capabilities, behaviours and harms that can be observed, studied and tested.  The report also argues that stronger AI verification and whole-system assurance will be an important part of that response, assessing not just individual models, but the technology, people, processes and operating environments around them. A year can change a lot. 🔥 At Quantum World Congress 2025, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore joined us to announce a major new chapter for the University of Maryland’s Discovery District Maryland and Maryland’s growing quantum ecosystem (looking at you Maryland Department of Commerce). This year, he returned to QWC in the Capital of Quantum — with that momentum no longer just something being announced, but something you could see taking shape all around us. That’s the part we love. Big ideas matter. Big announcements matter. But what happens next matters even more: the research, the infrastructure, the partnerships, the talent, and the companies that turn ambition into an ecosystem. A few moments from Governor Moore at #QWC2026. 📸 👓️ Check out the full album via Flickr on our website: https://lnkd.in/eneiNVpi #QuantumWorldCongress #Quantum #Maryland #CollegePark #CapitalOfQuantum Infleqtion IonQ Photonic Inc. Infleqtion hit its 2026 goal of 30 logical qubits on schedule last week. Its earlier goal for 2026 was 10 logical qubits with error correction, and the 30 it delivered can spot mistakes but do not repair them. A logical qubit is a group of physical qubits, here atoms, working together so that errors can be caught and, in stronger designs, fixed. Infleqtion used 80 atoms to make its 30. When an error shows up, that run is thrown away. Only clean runs count. That is fine for short jobs. For a long calculation almost no run would finish clean, so a useful quantum computer has to fix errors as it goes. Harvard ran the same kind of experiment with 48 logical qubits in 2023. In its press release, Infleqtion says the signal was about 1,000 times stronger than the noise. About one output in four fell inside the set of answers a perfect machine could give. Random guessing manages one in 4,096. The 1,000 is the ratio between the two. Three in four outputs fell outside the set. In a March SEC filing, Infleqtion set 2028 goals of 100 logical qubits and a million operations in a row. For that, its logical qubits would have to go wrong less than about once in a million steps. That error rate is the number I will ask for on the way there. 🎤 What questions should QAC 2027 be asking? The best conversations don’t start with “What can quantum do?”. They start with “What problem are we trying to solve?” For the Quantum Australia Conference 2027 in Sydney, we’re building a global program that puts real-world challenges alongside emerging quantum capability, exploring what’s changing, where quantum could create genuine value, what still needs to be proven and what it will take to move from opportunity to action. And we want your perspective in the room. We’re inviting Speaker Expressions of Interest from across industry, quantum, research, investment, government and the international ecosystem. Whether you’re an industry leader with a challenge worth exploring, a researcher pushing the technical frontier, a company building new capability, an investor looking at what makes quantum scalable, or an expert with a perspective that could challenge the conversation, we want to hear from you. 📍 17–18 February 2027 | Sydney, Australia 📅 Speaker EOIs close 11 October 2026, 11:59pm AEST 🎤 Submit your Speaker EOI → https://lnkd.in/g4hezND5 🌏 Learn more → https://lnkd.in/gwHuBwGf

The #Medicare incident may be less about “AI hacking” — and more about the security model we're using for AI agents. The revelation that an #OpenAI agent gained unauthorised access to an Australian Government Medicare statistics portal in June should get the attention of every CISO, CIO and security team deploying agentic AI. The agent accessed public and non-public files. The investigation is continuing, and there is no suggestion at this stage that individual Medicare records were accessed. But two things stand out. 1. An AI agent doesn't need to be malicious to become a security problem. Traditional security asks: “Who is the attacker?” With autonomous agents, we increasingly need to ask: “What can this agent do when its objective, permissions and interpretation of its environment don't align?” An agent pursuing a legitimate objective can still take an unintended path — interacting with systems, following links and attempting actions at machine speed. 2. Notification matters too. The PM says it took OpenAI three months to notify the Australian Government about the incident. That raises an important question for organisations deploying AI agents: What happens when our AI does something it wasn't supposed to do? Who detects it? Who owns the agent's identity? What can it access? What actions require approval? Can its behaviour be reconstructed? And who gets notified — and when? Australia's own cyber guidance now recommends least privilege, strong agent identity, continuous monitoring, human oversight and graduated autonomy for agentic AI. So perhaps the bigger lesson isn't: “AI can hack government websites.” It's this: If we're going to give AI agents the ability to act, we need to secure them like identities — not just treat them like software. #CyberSecurity #AI #AgenticAI #AIsecurity #CyberRisk #ZeroTrust

🟢 QSECDEF Australia | Online Weekly Meetup Monday 21 September 2026 | 12:00 pm AEST ⚡ THE HUGGING FACE INCIDENT — WHEN AI AGENTS START COLLABORATING: What emergent multi-agent behaviour could mean for the post-quantum cryptography transition This week, QSECDEF Australia turns its attention to the recent Hugging Face incident and some of the important questions it raises about AI agents, emergent multi-agent behaviour and cybersecurity. Muria Roberts, Director of QTM-X QUANTUM ADVISORY (Education, Business Strategy & Cybersecurity), will begin with a short presentation exploring: ▪️ What exactly is an AI agent? ▪️ What happened in the Hugging Face incident? ▪️ What do we learn from it? And then we open the discussion to the room: 🟢What could this mean for the post-quantum cryptography transition? The transition to quantum-safe cybersecurity is an enormous and complex undertaking — and indications are that many organisations may be underestimating both its complexity and the time required. 🟢 Could accelerating that transition eventually require us to harness collaborative AI agents? And if so, what have we just learned about the opportunities — and the risks? This week’s session is about exploring those questions together. ⸻ 👉 JOIN US ONLINE 📅 Monday 21 September 2026 🕛 12:00 pm AEST 🟢 We are back to our usual Zoom meeting link this week. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gDpkngf2 ALL ARE WELCOME ⸻ 🟢 About QSECDEF Australia QSECDEF Australia is a free, open professional community meeting weekly to network, share knowledge, analyse real-world developments & build practical capability for Australia’s quantum-secure future. 🔐 Meeting Disclaimer Participants are asked to come off camera & introduce themselves so we know who is in the room.
