Join our crusade against AI generated SPAM.
The GitHub REST API does not have a direct parameter to specify a time duration when blocking a user. While the GitHub web UI allows organization owners and moderators to block a user for a specific duration (such as 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 30 days, or 90 days), the API endpoint only supports a flat, permanent block. This is very unfortunate. Due to the high amount of AI generated SPAM being sent to open source projects, the only working solution I found to keep contributions open is to auto-detect spammy behavior and enforce a cooldown period by banning the user for a short time, supplying a proper notice with instructions to avoid triggering the antispam detection in the next interactions. I sent product feedback to Github: https://lnkd.in/dXHYzrAT. Help is welcome to bring this to their attention.

Strong open source communities are built by people who share what they know. As part of Google Summer of Code 2026, Stellar is helping mentor the next generation of open source contributors on OpenWISP. Clément Beaujoin and Alexandre Vincent are directly involved in the program, sharing their expertise and supporting contributors throughout the journey. 🚀 From opening pull requests to opening conversations about AI's impact on open source. A moment I'll never forget. A huge thank you to Google Summer of Code, the entire organizing team, Stephanie Taylor, Mary Radomile, an amanda casari, and everyone who allowed me to be part of GSoC Alumni CAMP India 2026. It was an amazing event that brought together contributors, mentors, and maintainers from across the open source community. It was also the first GSoC Alumni Camp in India in over a decade. I won't lie, I was quite nervous when I stepped onto the stage. But as I got into the talk, I became more comfortable, and I was able to finish it with confidence. It was great to see people engaging with the topic and continuing the discussion afterward. Here are the short points I covered in my talk: 1. AI has made contributing easier, but reviewing has become harder. 2. AI code can create the false impression of meaningful contributions. 3. Code review is becoming the new bottleneck in open source. 4. AI hallucinations make maintainers' jobs harder. 5. Every minute spent reviewing AI-generated, low-quality contributions is a minute that could have been spent mentoring contributors or improving the project. 6. A maintainer's time is the scarcest resource in open source. 7. How openwisp is handling these issues. 8. The success of AI should be measured by how much time it saves, not by how much code it generates. One of the highlights of the event was meeting so many amazing people from the open source community. I had some great conversations, learned from others' experiences, and had a lot of fun throughout the event. A special thanks to my mentors Federico Capoano and Gagan Deep, the OpenWISP community, and everyone who attended my session. Looking forward to contributing more to open source and sharing more with the community in the future. #GoogleSummerOfCode #GSoC #OpenSource #OpenWISP #AI #OSS #Community #Bengaluru #TechTalk

Thanks to my mentors Federico Capoano, Gagan Deep & Oliver. Without them, this wouldn't have been possible.
