  • A smart home should work the way you choose, not the way one company decides. Our latest position paper calls on the smart home industry to prioritize interoperability and personalization, and proposes increased legal protections to strengthen consumer choice in the smart home. An overview of our three core recommendations: 1️⃣ Interoperable by design. Smart home devices and systems should work together, backed by open source, open connectivity standards, documented APIs, and local-first control that keeps working when the internet doesn’t. 2️⃣ Personalization as a priority. A smart home is still a home. That means offering deep customization alongside accessible defaults, and championing a healthy market where no single company decides what’s possible. 3️⃣ Choice protected by law. We’re calling for a right to adversarial interoperability, a ban on anti-consumer practices like walled gardens and surveillance pricing, and an end to updates that remove features you've already paid for. • A huge thank you to DuckDuckGo for supporting the Open Home Foundation with a $50,000 donation. Support like this helps us continue our fight for the principles of privacy, choice, and sustainability for smart homes — and build a future where everyone can have a home that works for them, not Big Tech. We’re proud to have DuckDuckGo backing that mission. https://lnkd.in/p/eXrt_SWC

  • From smart speakers to meetups, this month is all about voice 🎙️ In this month’s newsletter, we round up community projects giving Big Tech voice assistants a new life by bringing them into Home Assistant, where you have the final say on where your words go. We’re also looking ahead to Community Day on November 7, with meetups happening around the world. Find one near you, set up your own, and catch up on everything else happening across the Open Home community. Read the full newsletter: https://lnkd.in/eFQTtbpc

  • It's #WorldStandardsDay! At #IFA2026, our Lead Developer Matter, Ingo Fischer, spoke with the Connectivity Standards Alliance about why Matter and Thread are the key to a smart home that's private, works locally and gives you a choice of devices. Open standards make that possible. Thanks to everyone who builds them. #Matter #Thread #SmartHome

Our Lead Developer Matter Ingo Fischer caught up with the Connectivity Standards Alliance at #IFA2026 to share why Matter and Thread are key to a private, local-first smart home – and how they fit our mission of privacy, choice, and sustainability: 🔒 Home Assistant's Matter controller is local-first, with no cloud required. 🌉 Matter bridging, including community projects built on matter.js, brings devices that will never get a Matter update from their manufacturer into the standard. 📈 The Open Home Foundation Matter Server has passed one million installations. 🧵 Thread provides a reliable, energy-efficient IPv6 mesh that's local by design. Ingo's advice to manufacturers: if your device types are already in the standard, just do it. If they aren't yet, join the Alliance and help get them in. "Privacy matters, Matter matters, and Thread also matters. So use it." Thanks to the Connectivity Standards Alliance and Thread Group for the conversation! #csaiot #standardsmatter #iotsolutions #iotsecurity #globaltech #IFA2026

  • Big news! 💎 We're a Diamond Sponsor of Women In Cybersecurity Community Association 2026! We believe technology is better when everyone gets a say, so this is a perfect fit for us. Thank you, WICCA, for having us! 🖤 Are you going? Come and say hello! Our team will be there and we'd love to meet you.

💎 SURPRISE. Apparently October had one more thing in store for WICCON. With just three weeks to go, we are ridiculously excited to announce a last-minute DIAMOND SPONSOR! 🏠 The Open Home Foundation If you know Home Assistant, you probably already know part of their work. The Open Home Foundation fights for privacy, choice and sustainability in the smart home, supporting open-source projects and open standards that put people in control of their technology, including Home Assistant, ESPHome and hundreds of standards, drivers and libraries. And now they’re supporting WICCON. 🖤 There’s something particularly fitting about a foundation built around open technology and strong communities supporting a conference built around sharing knowledge, creating opportunities and putting women’s achievements in cybersecurity in the spotlight. We genuinely did not expect to be announcing another sponsor this close to WICCON. Let alone a Diamond Sponsor. 💎 What an October surprise. A HUGE thank you to the Open Home Foundation for joining us and helping make WICCON2026 possible. Now somebody please tell October, respectfully, to stop adding things to our planning spreadsheet. 😂 📅 October 29–30 📍 De Lichtfabriek, Haarlem 🎟️ https://lnkd.in/edaUQbsX
