About us

A lot of companies say they’re “mission-driven.” Our unique corporate structure guarantees that every decision we make upholds our mission: to ensure the internet remains open and accessible. Beholden to neither shareholders nor investors, Mozilla Corporation is wholly owned by the not-for-profit Mozilla Foundation. Along with our communities of 20,000+ contributors and collaborators, Mozilla Corporation’s staff designs, builds, and distributes software that allows people to enjoy the internet on their own terms. Our flagship product — the Firefox browser — has expanded into a family of products that protects users and alerts them of risks, safeguards passwords and provides a secure VPN (with more to come). By maintaining a safe, open internet we're helping humanity, while also helping the individual humans employed here to reach their personal and professional goals. With a relatively small team serving hundreds of millions of people, a culture of exploration, and a commitment to mentorship, opportunities abound to learn and grow at Mozilla.

MCP adoption is outpacing agent governance. in 21 months, monthly MCP SDK downloads grew from about 2 million to more than 110 million. public MCP servers grew roughly 500x over the same stretch. by march 2026, 28% of the fortune 500 were running MCP in production. yet only about 21% of companies say their agent governance is mature. identity is largely handled. MCP now requires OAuth 2.1 + PKCE, and A2A ships signed agent cards, so an agent can prove who it is. neither tells you what that authenticated agent is allowed to write, or where the data it touches is allowed to go. that’s the gap. agents are going into production faster than anyone is writing the rules for them. and the rules are what decides who’s in control. full data in Mozilla State of Open Source AI repost - link in the comments.

Open source AI can already handle most of what people actually need from AI. What it's missing is the easy button. Our State of Open Source AI report found that 79% of developers adding AI use open models. But only 53% of teams ever reach production. Cost, security, integration and maintenance keep getting in the way. That's the gap Mila - Institut québécois d'intelligence artificielle and Mozilla are working to close, with support from the Government of Canada. Here's what's coming, and what we're aiming for: → Expected within six months: working reference implementations for enterprise, government and public-interest use cases → The two-year ambition: solve this problem outright, so open source AI can be adopted fully and easily, anywhere, by anyone The goal is an open source AI ecosystem that fits together as seamlessly as the internet itself, and that everyone can build on. Whether you run an enterprise, a government team, a startup or a side project: come build it with us. https://mzl.la/4jJH5ZH

Your ability to choose your browser should not depend on where you live. In the European Economic Area (EEA), the law requires fairer design and Microsoft built it. Everywhere else, people get a worse version. Same product code. Different user experience. More than 100 days after publishing Over The Edge 2.0, we’re still pressing Microsoft to stop harmful design practices and respect people’s choices about the technology they choose to use. We asked Microsoft to do better. Unfortunately, Microsoft only removes the harmful design practices undermining user choice when the law requires it.   Microsoft has shown it can make changes for some people. We’re asking it to extend a fairer design to everyone, regardless of where they live. Read more below.

Open source is growing fast but we still need diversity and a wide range of voices involved. Dependable infrastructure needs a wide range of voices and human judgment behind. This isn't optional, it's the foundation. If you missed the last Owners Not Renters live show, the full video will be on Mozilla’s Youtube channel. The next one will be on Tuesday October 13 at 11am ET. In the meantime, check out this clip from last week's live!

  • 🌱Nature rarely bets everything on one species. Resilient ecosystems depend on redundancy, local adaptation, and lots of different things finding ways to thrive. Technology should work more like that. Instead, we’ve spent years moving in the opposite direction: fewer companies, fewer models, fewer visions for what progress is supposed to look like. A monoculture is efficient right up until it isn’t. 👀 Which is exactly why this year’s MozFest theme is Wilding. Join me (and 2,000+ others!) at Barcelona’s Fabra i Coats to see what more possible futures look like: a raucous collision of experiments, ideas, builders, artists, technologists, and fellow travelers — all powered by a little defiant optimism. October 28–30. Barcelona. Come join Mozilla and see what grows when we make room for more possibilities. https://mzl.la/4iWCe7e

rent access to someone else's machine and you’re the one who’s trapped when they reprice. performance got open weights in the door. optionality is why they’ll last. the meter is already breaking budgets. Microsoft cancelled most Claude Code licences in june. Uber burned through its entire 2026 AI budget in four months and had to cap usage. but leaving isn’t so simple. your memory can’t always come with you. and moving it will cost you.  open weights hand the control back to the user. self-host on infrastructure you control and no one can repossess. if your memory and context can move with you between tools and providers, you own it. if they can't, you're renting.   stop asking which model. start asking where you want to build. learn more in Mozilla's State of Open Source AI report. link in the comments.
