Overture Maps has introduced some significant changes in its September 2026 release, including schema v2.0.0, the replacement of the Places categories property with taxonomy, and changes to GERS ID generation. I took a closer look at these updates, focusing on their practical implications for data users and examining actual Places data in central Tokyo, Japan. I also created an interactive map using Kumoy, where you can explore the new classification hierarchy and inspect individual Places and their source information. In this article, I share my findings and discuss what these changes mean for those working with Overture Maps data, including some considerations around GERS ID stability.
