Knowing a language and speaking it are not the same skill. Most adults who studied English for years still freeze the moment they need to say something out loud. That's one of the ideas Sylvia Johnson, Head of Learning Design at Loora, shared twice recently: in a radio interview on Spanish show "A media Sesión," and in a talk at the H-INET Conference (Higher Education in Israel Network of English Teachers) on measuring spoken fluency at scale. Traditional methods build declarative memory, knowing the rules. Fluency depends on procedural memory, the kind you only build by producing the language again and again in realistic situations. 🔹 Fear is a real barrier. The "affective filter" means anxiety competes with language processing for your brain's resources. With an AI tutor, nobody is judging you. You can get it wrong ten times in a row at no cost, and that's where learning happens. 🔹 Consistency beats intensity. Short, regular practice consolidates better than one long weekly session. Our users in Spain average about 11 minutes a day, and that regularity is what makes the difference. 🔹 Talk about what you care about. No fixed syllabus. One user spent 40% of their lessons talking about football. Another covered 38 topics in a few weeks. The more you care about the topic, the less you think about the language and the more you simply use it. 🔹 AI and teachers, in tandem. Great teachers won't compete with AI. They'll use it to give learners the unlimited speaking practice no human schedule can offer. At H-INET, Sylvia presented Loora's continuous assessment framework: instead of scheduled oral exams with trained raters, learners are scored from unscripted conversation alone, independently across vocabulary breadth and stretch, grammatical structures, functional communication, fluency, and pronunciation, mapped to an extended 10-band CEFR scale. There's no separate test, because the conversation itself is the assessment, and progress shows up on much shorter timescales than traditional assessment allows. Both stages led to the same idea: fluency isn't something you're tested on once. It's something you build, and measure, every time you speak. And one personal favorite from the interview: when she was learning Spanish, the word "sobremesa" taught her more about the culture than any textbook. That's what a new language gives you: not just vocabulary, but a new way of being in the world. #LanguageLearning #EdTech #AIinEducation

Politics, philosophy, water sports – none of these are part of a standard language curriculum. Yet they’re all real conversations happening on Loora. In its coverage of our $22M funding round, Globes highlighted one of the insights we see in our platform data: 72% of Loora users practice English for career growth. But real fluency isn’t built by working through rigid modules alone. As we shared with Globes: “It’s precisely the freedom to discuss personal interests that turns every conversation into effective learning.” When learners choose what they want to talk about, practice becomes more relevant, more natural, and much closer to the conversations they’ll actually have in real life. It might sound counterintuitive, but just 14 minutes of English practice a day can add up to real, measurable progress. In Germany - one of our most important markets - Loora users spend an average of 14 minutes a day practicing. And for many of them, English is directly tied to their careers: leading meetings, preparing for job interviews, giving presentations, and navigating complex professional conversations. German business publication TrendReport recently sat down with Roy Mor to explore why consistency matters more than intensity when learning a language. With regular practice, we typically see measurable improvements in speaking confidence within just 4 to 6 weeks. And with more than 200M interactions logged (one learner currently on a 1,377-day streak 👏 ) the pattern is pretty clear: small, consistent practice adds up. Read the full article in the comments 👇
