The Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Francis Halzen for his discovery of high-energy neutrinos, which provide direct paths to their origin. From the IEEE Spectrum archives, read how the IceCube Observatory actually works and the way a team of scientists was able to track such an elusive particle: https://lnkd.in/gZp8xM8q

The Nobel Prize for Medicine just went to the pioneers of optogenetics, a technique that lets scientists control neurons with light! Revisit our 2016 feature on the tiny wireless implants that brought this remarkable capability to freely moving lab mice: https://lnkd.in/eXdBDMrT

As AI inference eclipses training, hardware teams are rethinking memory hierarchies. Raptor’s 3D stacks, Majestic’s 128 TB racks, and wafer-scale SRAM engines are all competing to own the decode phase. https://lnkd.in/gMe2gMha

From Silicon Valley joyrides in the tZero to celebrity deposits on the Roadster, Tesla’s early years expose how hard it is to turn mind-bending performance into a manufacturable, safe, and scalable product. https://lnkd.in/exGWDAkh

🧬 By folding DNA into specific patterns, researchers may be able to create new solutions for drug delivery and immunotherapy. A new AI tool allows scientists and engineers to design DNA layouts that can fold into any shape they want. https://lnkd.in/daXnMsiE

Thank you for your recognition General David H. Petraeus, US Army (Ret.). Read the full piece on Russia's new jet drones bringing hard choices for Ukraine: https://lnkd.in/eiGp7i-N
Me in IEEE Spectrum on why there is no solution to jet-powered Shahed drones, yet. And why it's about to get worse: 1) Ukraine is currently relying on expensive solutions like MANPADS and F-16s to down these drones. 2) No interceptor drone with scaled production addresses the problem. 3) The problems lie in electronics, aerodynamics, piloting... and in the end in physics. The relative speed of a head-on intercept of a Geran-4 cruising at 400 km/h with an interceptor drone flying at 250 km/h is 650 km/h. Good luck manually piloting a shoebox-sized device into half a square-meter. Want to perform a chase intercept? Good luck flying an interceptor drone at above 500 km/h for more than a minute or two. I know how hard this stuff is, I test these things. WORSE The attacker's advantage is multiplied by command and control. Russia has been denied Starlink. The result will - and I'm ready to ___ on that hill - be that Russia will get Rassvet done. It sees it as existential. Rassvet will enable, and, per my strong suspicion, IS already enabling precision strikes (and yes, I see the SBU HQ one as a likely demonstration/test, given the low terminal altitude of the G-4). The video data from these strikes will be used to train models which will enable near-autonomous, swarmed, massed operation of flocks of Geran-4, -5 and -6. My ballpark guesstimate is that we're five to six years behind on Russia's lead in NATO. If we take innovation and procurement inertia into account, I'd put us close to 8-10 years behind Russia. Russia is now equipping these things with seeker heads which are capable of autonomously searching for targets, and with specialized payloads that can cut through bridge and high-voltage power pylons. They're literally turning these things into the cheapest jets and cruise missiles in history. Do you think that's the latest tech that's in development over there? IRIS2 is so late it might become irrelevant for deterrence before the first sats are launched. Our air defense developments are feeble. And in terms of our own developments when it comes to DPS? Again, 5-10 years behind. We must get out of the shadow of our adversaries and overtake. There is really no alternative. Strong words to wash down with your morning coffee, I know. But necessary words. Thanks for the Tereza Pultarova for the great questions, and for IEEE Spectrum for the continued trust. Please feel encouraged to challenge me in the comments!

The U.S. federal government is making it harder for students and highly skilled workers to get visas, forcing U.S. tech companies to hire workers abroad. University programs are struggling, too, and are projected to lose hundreds of millions to billions of dollars per year. https://lnkd.in/ewV7y3Q4

The AI frontier moves faster than your tapeout schedule. While a leading-edge chip can take 18 months and $1B+ to design, generic LLMs and manual workflows can't keep pace with today's complexity – digital, analog, and 3D IC alike. Meet IC-star, ChipAgents' new autonomous chip execution engine, built to close that gap. In this webinar, you'll learn: - The four core technologies behind silicon design autonomy – and why they must be co-optimized to work reliably - How to move past point-solution acceleration to automate full engineering workflows, not just isolated tasks - Real deployment results from Ambiq, using agentic AI to speed up chip development for physical AI systems - How teams are shortening tapeout cycles and improving PPA convergence while cutting token costs Whether you're an engineer under deadline pressure or a leader evaluating where agentic AI actually delivers ROI, this session cuts through the hype with real workflows and real results. https://lnkd.in/gP69QGit

A group of space tech aficionados wants to send humanity’s first mission to another star: Alpha Centauri. The Fermi Explorer could launch as soon as 2029, but would take 80,000 years to reach its destination. https://lnkd.in/g3JiPHzs

President Trump recently signed executive orders on the development of the quantum computing industry, including mandates to develop a scientifically relevant quantum computer by 2028. Is this even achievable? https://lnkd.in/eZhgfgbs
