How do you document a metadata enrichment project so that others can trust it, reuse its outputs, and build on it? Each COMET pilot is documented openly in a shared Project Doc, from kick-off to evaluation. The doc covers objectives, collaborators, status updates, outputs, and lessons learnt, and is open for comment throughout. The Project Doc is now a reusable template, shaped by feedback from the community. Teams can use it to invite input before work begins, document completed projects retrospectively, or coordinate curation across organisations. Open Publishing Awards is happening! This is a community celebration. The aim is to highlight remarkable contributions and learn from them, with selected projects receiving special recognition. Submit a nomination at openpublishingawards.net. The awards celebrate publishers, creators, technologists, and advocates advancing open knowledge. They also offer an opportunity to reflect on what openness makes possible: collaboration, trust, shared effort, and work that others can adapt and build upon. COMET datasets available on ORION-DBs Explore metadata enrichments of arXiv and DataCite COMET (https://lnkd.in/efXzxThF) is developing collaborative metadata enrichment practices, including ways for provenanced enrichments to flow into open scholarly metadata sources. COMET provides open datasets with enrichments to arXiv and DataCite on Zenodo and Huggingface. DataCite enrichments can also be retrieved through the DataCite API, but are not (yet) included in DataCite metadata files. To facilitate broader use of these datasets, including combining them with arXiv and DataCite metadata, various COMET datasets are now provided via ORION-DBs. https://lnkd.in/eTKSXpYg Enrichments include links between preprints and articles, affiliation matching, funder extraction and resource type refinement.

ORION-DBs starts FORCE11 working group Join the public webinar on Sept 4 2026 15:00-16:15 CEST With ORION-DBs (https://lnkd.in/ek2SeDgC), a growing set of actors are hosting large research information datasets in shared spaces, notably in Google BigQuery. To coordinate amongst current and future contributors and work towards community standards for discovery, processing, preservation and documentation, we are starting a FORCE11 working group (https://lnkd.in/eQd9TBbF). The working group will also seek to build a community around future alternatives to proprietary cloud systems for data sharing at scale and identify future paths to community-led training and development resources. Our goal is to build a community with a focus on supporting the users of Open Research Information resources to make more sophisticated and complex use of these data sources. We will do this by consolidating and expanding the resources themselves through supporting providers, gathering user stories and developing training materials. Finally we will scope pathways to technological independence from proprietary systems consistent with the needs of users. Public webinar On Friday Sept 4 15:00-16:15 CEST we will organize a public webinar to the ORION-DB initiative, present a number of use cases and introduce the FORCE11 Working Group. While Wikipedia is foundational internet infrastructure, its structured data complement, Wikidata, drives an equally powerful, less visible impact. This panel showcases applications for publishing metadata within this collaborative ecosystem. We evaluate the impact of making Linked Open Data accessible to local researchers and AI systems.   Speakers address FAIR open data principles, strategies to mitigate systemic information gaps, and the value of public access to reference datasets for elevating marginalized demographics and promoting scholarly dissemination.   Each presenter, an active Wikipedia and Wikidata editor, shares a case study:   Dorothy Howard / user:Hexatekin (Pratt Institute): Focuses on accommodations for neurodivergent users, presenting data modeling approaches designed to enhance accessibility for neurodiversity in architecture.   Robin Isadora Brown / user:RobinIsadorable (Trans Music Archive): Develops data models for transgender musicians. We have a new Insights and Thoughts Piece This thought piece, written by our community lead Seun Olufemi, titled "Doing Science in the Age of AI: Community Is Infrastructure", was published today on Upstream (FORCE11) In it, Seun emphasizes that while AI tools present exciting opportunities to bridge gaps in access, training, and productivity, particularly for researchers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), they cannot replace the human infrastructure of science. Community, mentorship, and belonging remain essential, especially in the Global South. Drawing from experiences with OLS (Open Life Science Limited) and Bioinformatics Outreach Nigeria, the piece highlights how these networks create sustainable pathways for inclusion and opportunity. We are grateful to the editor, John Chodacki, and the entire Upstream team at FORCE11 for amplifying this important perspective from the Global South.
