Last week, we welcomed Anne Shaw, OBE FCIHT FCILT, Chief Executive Officer of the National Transport Authority, to Galway Chamber’s Lunchtime Insights for a wide-ranging conversation on transport, connectivity and the future of the Western Region. Following a welcome address from Galway Chamber President Gemma Costello LIB QFA, Anne shared her experience and perspective on the role of transport in supporting communities, businesses, and regional development. The conversation continued over lunch with a fireside chat hosted by Maurice O'Gorman, exploring the opportunities and challenges ahead for Galway and the wider West. A strong transport network is fundamental to the region’s competitiveness, supporting investment, access to talent, productivity and long-term economic growth. The discussion highlighted the importance of continued focus on connectivity as Galway and the Western Region plan for the future. Thank you to Anne for joining us, to Maurice for hosting the fireside conversation, and to everyone who attended and contributed to the conversation.

  • Yesterday, Hollie McHugh, our Commercial Manager, attended the annual Irish Tourism Industry Confederation - ITIC Conference in The Convention Centre Dublin (The CCD), where this year's theme was "Adjust, Adapt and Accelerate." It was a fantastic day filled with insights on the future of tourism, sustainability, AI, infrastructure, and the importance of ensuring tourism remains high on the European agenda. A few statistics that really stood out: ✅ Tourism supports 230,000 jobs in Ireland. ✅ 1 in 10 Irish people work in the tourism industry. ✅ 70% of tourism employment is based outside Dublin. ✅ Mainland Europe has 450 million people, offering significant growth opportunities for Ireland. ✅ 60% of European leisure travel takes place between October and June. ✅ 793 million international tourists visited EU countries. ✅ AI is increasingly shaping how travellers research and book holidays. ✅ The upcoming EU Tourism Strategy will focus on sustainability, competitiveness and resilience. One of the most interesting topics discussed was the upcoming EU Tourism Strategy, due to be released in early November. Sustainability, competitiveness, and resilience are expected to be at its core, helping shape future tourism investment and priorities across Europe. The message was clear: if tourism isn't prioritised at policy level, it becomes much harder to secure the resources and support needed for the sector to thrive. Another key theme was AI and how rapidly it is changing how people research and plan their holidays. Tourism Ireland shared how they are already adapting to this shift through Generative Engine Optimisation, ensuring Ireland remains visible in AI-powered search and travel recommendations. With AI becoming a bigger part of travellers decision-making process, it is an area that will continue to influence how destinations market themselves in the years ahead. A recurring message throughout the day was the need for continued investment in infrastructure, accommodation, sustainability initiatives, and connectivity to ensure Ireland remains competitive as a destination. A huge thank you to ITIC and all of the speakers for an informative and thought-provoking event. It was encouraging to see such a strong focus on collaboration, innovation, and planning for the future of tourism.
