One year ago, my book AV1 Video Coding Standard: Principles and Implementation was published. 🎉 A lot can happen in a year. The most unexpected moment came this past January, when China Machine Press (Huazhang) named me a 2025 Rising Author (新锐作者) for this book. I'm still not entirely sure I belong in that group — but I'm grateful for it. Writing the book taught me as much as I hope it taught its readers, if not more. AV1 is a genuinely remarkable standard, and trying to explain it clearly forced me to actually understand it. There's no better test of whether you understand something than having to write it down for someone else. To everyone who read it, corrected me, disagreed with me, or told me which chapter finally made transform coding click — thank you. Those conversations were the best part of this year. If you've put the book to work in an AV1 project, I'd genuinely love to hear how it went. Did you know AOMedia has an ID3 Timed Metadata specification? There are many benefits to adopting CMAF for HLS media delivery, but without a specification for carrying ID3 as sparse timed metadata in CMAF, deployment by companies in this ecosystem is blocked. This specification describes how such ID3 metadata can be carried as a timed metadata in CMAF-compatible fragmented MP4 (fMP4) stream as used by the HLS protocol.
