Last week,  I had the privilege of attending #MozFest for the first time!  As part of the #KeepItOn coalition’s 10th anniversary, Access Now hosted Sound of the silenced – a human impact installation centering voices from eight countries around the world who have experienced internet shutdowns. Amplifying voices of people and communities experiencing the devastating impact of internet shutdowns has always been at the core of our #KeepItOn campaign and we remain committed to doing so.  Interacting with people who stopped by the installation brought mixed emotions. Some were learning about internet shutdowns for the first time, some got deeply emotional, others found it too overwhelming to finish, and many couldn’t get enough and asked for more stories. Each of these reactions underscored just how vital storytelling and centering people impacted by shutdowns are to our advocacy.  A huge thank you to the #MozFest production team for helping us find a new home for the installation, as part of the RightsCon on the Road initiatives!  Missed MozFest? You can still listen to the installation here: https://lnkd.in/eXR_yBpf.  We’d love to hear from you! Still not a member of the #KeepItOn community? Join the movement today!

🗳️ The #AutonomousWeapons resolution has been adopted at the UN General Assembly's First Committee! Resolution L.37 tabled by Austria 🇦🇹 and 34 co-sponsor states at #FirstCommittee has passed with broad cross-regional support. ✅ 163 in favour 🟡 9 abstentions ❌ 5 against Where does your country stand? Swipe to the last slide to find out 🔎 🔗 Read our analysis at the first link in the comments In just over two weeks, states at the CCW’s Review Conference will decide their next steps in how to address autonomous weapons – for Stop Killer Robots, nothing less than strictly time-limited negotiations on new international law to constrain these systems is acceptable at this point. The international community must seize the opportunity of the Review Conference to reject the automation of killing, and ensure meaningful human control over the use of force, through specific prohibitions and regulations. States must act with courage and conviction to address digital dehumanisation and ensure meaningful human control over the use of force. #StopKillerRobots #UNGA #AutonomousWeaponsSystems

🚨 APPLE WARNS USERS OF MERCENARY SPYWARE TARGETING Apple has issued a new round of threat notifications to selected iPhone users across 99 countries, warning them that they may have been targeted by sophisticated mercenary spyware attacks. The latest notifications, reported on October 30, come amid growing concerns about the use of highly sophisticated commercial spyware against journalists, human rights defenders, activists, and other members of civil society. 🔎 What does receiving an Apple threat notification actually mean? It is a serious warning that Apple has detected indicators suggesting you may have been targeted by mercenary spyware. However, there are some important things to understand: 🔹 Being targeted does not necessarily mean your device was successfully compromised. The notification does not confirm whether an attack succeeded. 🔹 It does not identify the attacker. A notification alone cannot tell you who was behind the attempted attack or their motives. 🔹 Do not ignore the warning. It deserves immediate attention and expert assessment. 🔹 Verify the notification. Make sure it is genuine by checking your Apple Account directly. Be alert to phishing attempts impersonating Apple. 🔹 Seek expert assistance. A digital forensic investigation can help assess whether your device was compromised, preserve potential evidence, and identify traces of malicious activity. 🔐 What should you do if you receive an Apple threat notification? Take the notification seriously and follow Apple's security guidance. Avoid making unnecessary changes to your device before consulting a trusted digital security expert. Seek professional assistance to assess your device and preserve potential forensic evidence. Consider enabling Apple's Lockdown Mode if appropriate for your threat model. Keep your devices and software updated. At Access Now, our Digital Security Helpline supports journalists, activists, human rights defenders, and civil society organizations facing digital security threats. If you have received an Apple threat notification, or suspect that you may be targeted by spyware, please contact the Access Now Digital Security Helpline. My team can provide tailored digital security advice and, where appropriate, support with digital forensic investigations. 👉 Read our guidance on Apple threat notifications and spyware: https://lnkd.in/dxCf3uf6 Targeting is not the same as compromise, but every warning deserves to be taken seriously. Early, informed action matters. #DigitalSecurity #Spyware #Apple #HumanRights #DigitalRights #CyberSecurity #DigitalForensics #AccessNow
