South Dakota Secretary of State Johnson about seeking second term
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - South Dakota Secretary of State Monae Johnson has opened up about her decision to seek re-election.
Johnson says she has started projects that she would like more time to finish.
“One of the ones that we have started is our voter registration upgrade, and that should be launching a go live this fall, and we just started July 1st on our upgrade of our business platform, so if we’re going to be successful in working with businesses, we need the latest technology. So those are two projects that I’d love to finish,” said Johnson.
Johnson says it is challenging to get key priorities done in four years as those priorities take time. Johnson spent eight years working under previous secretaries of state before she took lead of the office.
In South Dakota. there hasn’t been a two-term secretary of state since Chris Nelson, who served from 2003 to 2011.

Democratic Candidate Terrance Davis is also running for the position. Davis is a former state trooper serving in both Tennessee and South Dakota. Davis’ campaign website says he will fight to establish an investigative division inside the secretary of state’s office to investigate fraud activities surrounding elections.
