Tom was an exceptional athlete at McKeesport, lettering in baseball, basketball, and football during his senior year. His overall pitching record was 27–5, and he threw two games where he struck out every single batter, but one – according to the back of his rookie card (pictured above / the front of that card appears in the biographical research section, Tom signed one for Baseball Almanac in 2002). He was one of the most sought after pitching prospects in the entire country, and ultimately signed with the Phillies on June 16, 1953, shortly after graduating from high school, for a $40,000 bonus.

Tom Qualters was a "victim" of the bonus rule at that time in baseball history, and was required to remain on the big league roster for two years. When given the opportunity to pitch, he surrendered a home run to the first batter he faced, gave up six earned runs, and was then put back on the bench. In 1954, he was on the roster the entire year, but did not appear in a single game, all season long.

The Phillies sent Tom Qualters down to the minor leagues after the two year requirement, where he pitched professionally for seven years with several different triple-A teams, taking the mound in 228 games. He was called-up during the September roster expansion in 1957, then ultimately sold to the White Sox in 1958. He ultimately appeared in thirty-four big league games, all in relief, and never once did was he awarded a decision! On Thursday, February 15, 2024, Tom Qualters died at The Patriot, in Somerset, Pennsylvania. He was 88 years old.
