"There's no right or wrong way to hit. Every hitter is different and you have to relate... People try to make up new ways to hit. There aren't really any new ways. The game hasn't changed in 200 years and it's not going to for another 200." - Bill Madlock in The Las Vegas Sun (Anthony Fenech, Ex-big league batting champ Bill Madlock helps local youth with swings, 05/10/2010)

Bill Madlock was a Major League Baseball player with the Texas Rangers (1973), Chicago Cubs (1974-1976), San Francisco Giants (1977-1979), Pittsburgh Pirates (1979-1985), Los Angeles Dodgers (1985-1987), and Detroit Tigers (1987). Did you know that Mad Dog, his nickname earned due to his fiery temper and numerous ejections (18), has the most batting titles of any player in baseball history who has not been inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame?
Did you know that Bill Madlock was the first player in Major League history to win multiple batting titles with two different teams? The first two, 1975 (.354) & 1976 (.339), with the Chicago Cubs and the second two, 1981 (.341) & 1983 (.323), with the Pittsburgh Pirates. No batting champion is easy, but the 1976 was especially close. On October 3, 1976, the final game of the regular season, Mad Dog collected four singles to raise his average from .333 to .339, one point ahead of Ken Griffey, who went 0-for-2, dropping his average to .336.
Did you know that Bill Madlock hit three home runs in a game once during his career, on June 28, 1987, tying the Detroit Tigers record for home runs in a game? Before Mad Dog, twelve different Tiger sluggers had a 3-homer game, Rocky Colavito did it twice, but Madlock was the first designated hitter from Detroit to tie the record.

Mad Dog's four batting title as a third baseman was a Major League record at the position until it was eclipsed in 1988 by Wade Boggs. His career batting average (.305) is comparable to several hall of fame players and at one point he had the highest career batting average, amongst active ballplayers, in the National League:
Batting champ Madock perfect for role of Pirates' team captain
When one thinks of the great hitters, one thinks of Ted Williams. They called him The Splendid Splinter, long and lean. Or of Hank Aaron, the man with the quick wrists. Or Mickey Mantle, so strong.
They don't usually think of a man nicknamed "Mad Dog" but who looks more like a cute little koala bear. He's 5-11 and the book says he weighs 190, but the book is the Pirates' media guide, not the Bible. A fib here and there can be excused.
Do not, however, be misled. The man can hit. Oh, can he hit. Unorthodox, sure... a short, quick stroke with almost no stride, sort of a Rube Goldberg invention in the batter's box.
It is a stroke built for the man who uses it. It is not Ted Williams' stroke for some simple reasons; Williams physically was as different from Bill Madlock as Madlock is from Myron Cope.
It works, and that is all that matters. It works so well that one the wall of Madlock Manor are four silver bats, emblematic of National League batting championships. Only 11 players have won as many; only Roberto Clemente, Stan Musial, Rogers Hornsby and Honus Wagner in the National League since the turn of the century. All of them are in the Hall of Fame.
Madlock won last year when he hit .323. It raised his lifetime average to .317. No active National Leaguer has a higher lifetime average. Pete Rose? He's at .306. Dave Parker? Naw, .305.
Madlock is No. 1.

Bill Madlock once held the dubious record for largest fine given to a major leaguer for an on-the-field incident ($5,000), and the second-longest suspension record (15 days). Sports Illustrated (May 9, 1983, Volume 58, Issue 19, Glad Times For Mad Dog, Steve Wulf) described the record setting day: "On May 1, 1980, Pittsburgh was playing Montreal, and with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth, Madlock tried to check his swing on a pitch from David Palmer. Home plate umpire Crawford called it strike three. 'Actually, the whole thing started when [Pirate Shortstop] Tim Foli asked me if it was a swing or a called strike,' Crawford recalls. 'I started to say, It was a swing and a strike, but all I got out was It was a swing....' and Madlock started arguing.' Madlock started arguing with his glove, which a teammate had routinely brought him from the bench. He hit Crawford in the face with the glove. 'Right on the bone underneath my nose,' says Crawford, 'and it stung.' Madlock was ejected, more for his profanity than anything else. But Expo President John McHale saw the incident and called League President Chub Feeney, asking for a stiff penalty."
