"'Controversy is a big nightmare of mine,' Lofton says between bites. 'I've always tried to watch what I say. There's enough controversy in society. I don't want to be a part of it because controversy starts rumors, and rumors start wrong perceptions. You can't tell the wrong story if there's nothing to tell.' Lofton, 27, the Cleveland Indians' multitalented centerfielder, guards his privacy like Price Waterhouse protects Oscar envelopes. And because he keeps such a low profile off the field, fans know little more than that he is the successor to Rickey Henderson as baseball's best lead-off hitter. In terms of natural athleticism, well-rounded baseball skills and the potential for greatness, he is rivaled only by Seattle Mariner outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. The difference is, Lofton probably has a lower Q-rating than Griffey's shoes." - Sportswriter Michael Silver in Sports Illustrated (May 1, 1995, 'Close to the Heart', Page 97)

Kenneth Lofton was a Major League Baseball player with the Houston Astros (1991), Cleveland Indians (1992-1996, 1998-2001, 2007), Atlanta Braves (1997), Chicago White Sox (2002), San Francisco Giants (2002), Pittsburgh Pirates (2003), Chicago Cubs (2003), New York Yankees (2004), Philadelphia Phillies (2005), Los Angeles Dodgers (2006), and Texas Rangers (2007).
Did you know that when Kenny Lofton stole sixty-six bases in 1992, he set a new (still standing) American League single season record for most stolen bases by a rookie? Not only was it a new AL rookie record, but it was also the most stolen bases in a season by a Cleveland Indian, breaking the mark of sixty-one steals set by Miguel Dilone in 1980. A year after Lofton set the franchise record, he broke his own record by stealing seventy bags, then he broke it yet again in 1996, stealing seventy-five bags. No Indian since Loften has ever reached the 60-steals plateau.
Did you know that Kenny Lofton was named one of the 100 Greatest Cleveland Indians Players ever? As part of the club’s 100th Anniversary Celebration in 2001, a panel of veteran baseball writers, historians and executives selected a roster of the Top 100 Greatest Indians and Lofton was named one of the twenty-three outfielders.

Kenny Lofton was a six-time consecutive All-Star (1994 through 1999), a four-time consecutive Gold Glove Award winner (1993 through 1996), and when he hung up his cleats on October 21, 2007, the speedster was ranked fifteenth on the Top 1,000 Stolen Base Career Leaderboard with six-hundred twenty-two. Historian / Author Bill James (The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract, Simon and Shuster, 2003) wrote that the five time consecutive stolen base champion (1992 through 1996) was not only the fastest player in the entire decade (The 1990s, Page 313), but also the best bunter of the decade, and an outfielder on the All-Decade Gold Glove Team:

Kenny Loften, a former Wildcat (pictured below), attended the University of Arizona on a basketball scholarship and in 1988, was part of the team which made it to the Final Four! The following season, Lofton was the starting point guard and the Wildcats made it into the Sweet Sixteen. Lofton selected baseball as his career and when he made it to the 1995 World Series, he became only the second ballplayer (Tim Stoddard was the first) to play in a college basketball Final Four and a World Series. Lofton picked well as he would eventually break Rickey Henderson's record of 33 career post-season stolen bases during the 2007 LCS (Lofton finished with 34).
