Baseball Almanac Top Quote

"Bennie Daniels: This tall, well-built righthanded pitcher, who worked for both the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Washington Senators between 1957 and 1965, today lives in Compton, California. He is working at the new Martin Luther King, Jr., County General Hospital in Los Angeles as a Community Program Specialist. Bennie's job brings him in contact with the youth of the community. He also works with the L.A. Park and Recreation District in teaching baseball fundamentals to Little Leaguers. Bennie has two special memories that highlight his career. The first is that he pitched the last game in Ebbets Field in 1957 against the then Brooklyn Dodgers. He and the Pittsburgh lost it, 2-0. His second big league memory is the opening game of the 1962 season which he pitched and won, 4-1, over the Detroit Tigers. The thing that makes this game stand out in his memory is that the late President Kennedy was there." - Baseball Digest. July 1971. WHAT EVER BECAME OF _______?. Page 83.

On September 24, 1957, Bennie Daniels made his Major League debut, pitched seven innings in his first start, scattered five hits, walked three batters, surrendered two runs, struck out two hitters, and earned his a first decision, an 0-2 loss versus the Pittsburgh Pirates. There were 6,702 fans who witnessed The Compton Comet's big league debut, but most of them were probably there because it was also the last regular season baseball game ever played in Ebbets Field!

Sandy Koufax threw four no-hitters across his hall of fame career. He also came within one-hit of two additional gems. Why mention this here? On May 23, 1960, Koufax pitched a complete game 1-hitter at Forbes Field, striking out ten Bucs, and surrendering just one hit — a seeing-eye single hit to left field by Bennie Daniels!

Did you know that Bennie Daniels has a unique Washington Senators double ballpark distinction; he pitched in the last game in Griffith Stadium (September 21, 1961) and the first game in D.C. Stadium (April 9, 1962)? The "second" iteration of the Washington Senators (1961-1971) became the modern-day Texas Rangers in 1972, making Daniels the first player in Rangers franchise history to wear #21 in a regular season game!
