Great Starting Point
Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2013LÖVE is a really fun technology that let's aspiring game developers make a quick start on getting their core skills up to scratch. This book turned out to be a surprisingly good introduction to both LÖVE and Lua, though I'd definitely recommend studying some additional Lua specific material.
The author takes us through the process of building a really neat little platform game. It's fun, looks great (as far as textbook "sample projects" go), and contains all of the essential elements that should help a reader to move from this book directly into a project of their own.
There's also some good (albiet short) sections on general game design principles. Nice to see this sort of "theory" information included.
If you're new to game design and want to dive straight in at a level that's not going to have you tearing your hair out, then LÖVE could be just the right technology for you. This book is short, but in a way, that's exactly what you need - it will get you straight into the action and take you just far enough to show you what you're capable of.
Overall - a really good read.

Feels like an Alpha version
Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2013The Pros:
This book walks you through building an entire (albeit very simple) level for a platform game. It's written in the style of a step-by-step tutorial, and once you've worked through the book, you can see how one might use Löve2d to build such a game that includes a character, enemies, collectables (e.g. coins), sounds, music and game state (such as player score and life meter).
Having read the book, I now feel pretty confident that I could start from scratch, and build a complete game.
The Cons:
The code examples contain a lot of errors. There are numerous typos, some variables have different names in different parts of the code, and the code examples have very inconsistent indentation. All in all, the code examples are just really difficult to read. Some issues have been addressed in the errata, but a lot of them have not. Just realize that if you get this book, you'll have to deal with buggy code examples. If you have little-to-no programming experience, this will make for a frustrating read.
All in all, I really like the approach of the book, and I hope an updated edition will fix the code examples. If you're an experienced developer, you can probably work through most of this book in a weekend, troubleshoot the broken code examples, and still get a decent grasp on Löve2d.
If you're a novice, this book is still OK, but you'll need to spend quite a lot of time paying close attention to the code and to the published errata. Good Luck!

A tutorial-like book featuring a complete example
Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2013The title is unfortunate: do not to expect to master LÖVE or Lua reading it.
However you will able to follow the development of a complete platform game (another title flawn: strategy games are not covered at all) using Lua and the LÖVE framework.
If you need a quick kick start on LÖVE framework and can tolerate some minor pitfalls then consider buying it.

Great book, easy to learn
Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2013This is a great book for learning how to program in Lua and making a game at the same time. It won't take long at all to actually have something moving around your screen that resembles a working game. I thought it was well thought out and really easy to follow, ie. you don't have to be a rocket scientist to program! Starts off with the basics but doesn't dwell on things that won't help you make a cool game. I liked it.

Nadia S.C.2 out of 5 starsTeaches some useful tips and tricks
Reviewed in Canada on March 28, 2016Teaches some useful tips and tricks, but not at all good if you prefer not depending on a ton of other libraries. It is the use of these libraries that I feel really hindered my ability to learn the concepts properly as they were not introduced organically, but as a means to omit more complex aspects of the framework. That being said, I'm sure the book is useful for those wanting to get up and running on very basic game development in LOVE and Lua
