About the authors

Mark Baker is a freelance travel writer with a penchant for offbeat stories and forgotten places. He's originally from the United States, but now makes his home in the Czech capital, Prague.
He writes mainly travel guides on Eastern and Central Europe for publishers like Lonely Planet, Frommer’s, Fodor’s and National Geographic, but finds real satisfaction in digging up stories in places that are either too remote or too quirky for the guides. He also contributes occasionally to publications like The Wall Street Journal and National Geographic Traveler. Prior to becoming an author, he worked as a journalist for The Economist, Bloomberg News and Radio Free Europe.
When he’s not traveling, these days he’s teaching Central European history and journalism at Anglo-American University in Prague or out riding his bike. He has a master’s degree in International Affairs from Columbia University in New York.

Neil was born in Scotland and has lived there most of his life. Based in Perthshire, he has been a full-time writer since 1988, working on more than 100 guidebooks for various publishers, including the Lonely Planet guides to Scotland, England, Ireland and Prague. An outdoors enthusiast since childhood, Neil is an active rock climber, hill-walker, mountain-biker, sailor and snowboarder, and a qualified fly-fishing guide and instructor. He has climbed and tramped in four continents, including ascents of Jebel Toubkal in Morocco, Mount Kinabalu in Borneo, the Old Man of Hoy in Scotland's Orkney Islands and the Northwest Face of Half Dome in California's Yosemite Valley.
Like most Lonely Planet authors, Neil fell into the guidebook-writing business by accident. Having fled the rat race of the oil industry soon after graduating as a geologist, he returned to university to do postgraduate research. But academia turned out to be just as dull as industry, so like any sane person he gave it all up to be a penniless writer. The penniless bit was easy. On the writing side, he began by producing articles for a Scottish magazine, but was soon off to photograph Corfu for a guidebook. Since then Neil has written and photographed dozens of guidebooks for several publishers, including HarperCollins, AA Publishing, Berlitz and Lonely Planet.

You can count on it
Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2007The Lonely Planet series was recommended to me, and the guide to Prague was the first one I purchased. The recommendation was right on, the guide's reputation is well deserved. Everything I needed to know is included, the places and restaurants were exactly as described, and the maps and walking tours were easy to follow.

LP
Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2010I have spent 6 days in Prague with this book and I can say this is a good tourist book for short trips. Not perfect though: the list of hotels is very weak, so better if you look for them yourself; restaurants listed as very good tend to became worse after good Lonely Planet-reviews. Otherwise this is really a nice guide with lots of useful tips.

Poorly organized
Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2011As far as descriptions of sights, restaurants tours, history, etc, the information was pretty accurate. But actually being in Prague and using the book to get around to different sights and restaurants was extremely difficult.
Instead of having a chapter on a specific neighborhood with everything in that neighborhood, they have a chapter on neighborhoods, then shopping, then eating, then drinking, then entertainment, etc. Having to flip to the eating section, then flip back to the neighborhood section, then flip to the map to see where it was located was very time consuming and annoying.
Another thing I didn't like was that the writing on the maps was much too small. I have perfect reading vision and could barely make out the street names and numbers.

Great travel guide
Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2012This will be my first time in Prague to study at university. This book has extensive information on the area with quick tips for foreigners. Although, I do wish that this book had more pictures. The map in the back is a must.

Frequent Visitor
Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2012I am a native of Prague living in LA for many years. I have been visiting Prague yearly since the Velvet Revolution and thought I new all there was to know. To my surprise the Lonely Planet guide taught me a heap I did not know and made me a much better host for first time visitors.

Ten4 out of 5 starsゆっくり旅には良いです。
Reviewed in Japan on September 25, 2011

Mona S.4 out of 5 starsMissing pull out map but very good service
Reviewed in Germany on June 26, 2013At first, I had been disappointed by this used book because the pull out map was missing - which is a crucial part of a city guide - but the worldofbooks service was excellent! After I had critized this, they contacted me and offered me to choose another used book of the same price to make up for the missing pull-out map. So, 4 stars in the end!

ChrismcFadden4 out of 5 starsJust the ticket
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 12, 2012Having visited Prague over the Easter weekend I brought two guide books with me but all you really need is this one. It just missed a 5 star rating as it was published in 2010 so there were a few out of date pieces of information and reviews, but that is to be expected. I would recommend checking out the 'Best breakfast' text box (but note, 'Red Hot & Blues' is closed down, whether it's due to reopen I don't know) and the 'Weird art' text box (page 142) detailing the sculptures of David Cerny scattered about Prague. The maps are great and easy to use and the book is broken down into background, neighbourhoods, eating, drinking, shopping, etc with some nice photography at the start. Great guide book, you can't really steer wrong with Lonely Planet.
