Commercialising the State Library of Queensland

Abstract

Since its move to new premises at the Queensland Cultural Centre in 1988, the State Library of Queensland has broadened community support for its activities. The move to a new building has produced a massive growth in demand for services. As one of the strategies to help meet this demand, the State Library has expanded its revenue base by raising a percentage of its funding from non-government sources. The State Library has tackled this challenge by providing the community with non—traditional library services, and by maximising every opportunity to broaden and strengthen community support for its services and facilities. During 1992–93 nongovernment funding represented 9.3% of the operating revenue of $12.433m. This compares favourably with the less than 1% of operating income raised from non-government sources during 1987–88.
