Today
In 1906 SOS (three dots, three dashes, three dots) was established as the international distress signal, introduced on July 1, 1908 and first used in an emergency on June 10 1909 by the Cunard liner SS Slavonia; in 1932 the kingdom of Iraq was granted independence after 17 years of British rule; in 1952 the first of three British atomic bombs was tested on the uninhabited Monte Bello islands off the coast of western Australia, which spread radioactivity across mainland Australia; in 1964 57 East German refugees began an escape to West Berlin after a tunnel was dug by university students in West Germany under the Berlin Wall. It was the largest mass escape since the wall was built in 1961; in 1990 East and West Germany formally united, ending 45 years of Cold War division.
Tomorrow
In 1535 the first complete English translation of the Bible was printed, with Miles Coverdale adding the Old Testament to the imprisoned William Tyndale’s work on the New Testament; in 1669 the Dutch artist Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn died at the age of 63, with no official notice of his death; in 1895 the first US Open golf tournament took place, at the nine-hole Newport Country Club in Rhode Island. The winner was Horace Rawlins, 21, an Englishman. The first US amateur championship also took place. One player had a pool cue for use as a putter; in 1957 the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik I, the world’s first artificial satellite, which was about the size of a beach ball and took 98 minutes to orbit the Earth.
Nature notes
Sloes glisten on the blackthorn, like bunches of grapes. In spring the shrub’s bridal white flowers lit up the hedgerows and now, thanks to the pollinating services of flies, beetles, bees and wasps, the fruit crop is ready to feed voles, wood mice and larger birds such as thrushes and hawfinches. Is anything as delicious and juicy-looking as a cluster of blue-black autumn sloes? The sloe’s visual allure is enhanced by a yeast, which grows on the fruit’s skin. This reflects ultraviolet light, making the fruit highly noticeable to birds, like a flashing neon light catching the human eye. If collecting sloes for gin, beware of the savage thorns.
