| From carpark at Murton -> Murton Fell -> Bink Moss -> Mickle Fell -> Little Fell. Over 2 days with Nathan. | axoree | 04/01/2020 |
| From SE starting at cattle grid on a no live firing day. Phoned the military at Warcop and given the green light by a Nepalese officer who also offered to help me get an Everest permit ha ha. CG route is the shortest but there is much soft and wet ground, cycling in on longer routes may be better. | Topographer57 | 21/10/2019 |
| On a non-firing day with a permit from county boundary and back over Little Fell | IWC | 24/08/2019 |
| Armed with a permit on a no firing day we headed out on the Nuttall route from Hilton. Little Fell Summit was very disappointing but Mickle Fell more than made up for it (shame about the horrendous pathless terrain during the middle section) | Jephcote83 | 03/08/2019 |
| From NY 8314 1994 on a non-firing day. Followed fenceline to NY 8038 2250, then direct to Little Fell (Elsmslie) before heading up onto the Mickle Fell ridge for the main hill and on to the trig. Direct route back towards start point, then veered off to pick up the sub5 Helbeck Fell. | jonglew | 14/07/2019 |
| Hilton - Roman Fell - Long Fell - Tinside Rigg - Little Fell - Mickle Fell - Murton Fell - Scordale - Hilton. Looks impressive from the west, first clear summit of the day | Gary Heath | 13/07/2019 |
| Applied for permit by email 12 days previous & got no reply. Scheduled non firing day rang recorded message 0800 number on the day no live firing so went for it. From Durham / Cumbria border on official route following the fence. Someone at summit had a permit which arrived 5 weeks before the date. | rogreeves | 06/07/2019 |
| From car park near Cow Green Reservoir on non-firing day. | lenman | 05/05/2019 |

| From cattle grid on road to south, with permit.
Cold dry weather meant that conditions underfoot were generally good. | Winterfloodian | 05/01/2019 |
| Obtained permit from Warcop before Christmas. Parked at cattle grid to SE of Hill on B6276. Followed wire fence and boundary stones all the way to summit. Stayed on E side of fence as this was where all the footbridges were. Nearly made the mistake of thinking the summit was the 788m spot height when in fact it is further NE. | Wheelsy | 05/01/2019 |
| Grains o'th'Beck, Close House, High Crag, trig then summit. 21k. | NormanW | 14/10/2018 |
| With Andy and permit from the south | colinfielding | 07/10/2018 |
| From Cattle grid on Cumbria/Durham border. Followed fence upto the plateau. Some areas wet underfoot, but not to bad. Howling wind on top though. With Colin and MOD permit. | bevandy114 | 07/10/2018 |
| With Deborah. Southern route, boggy as expected although the best way through/round was often by the fence. Round trip took 4hrs 40 minutes including lunch. Possible to do it in less but the weather was glorious and there was no need to hurry. | Donpeblo | 06/10/2018 |

| After more than two years in the planning we set off from Cow Green Reservoir with our access permit and Chris. Unfortunately we omitted to take a pontoon bridge with us which made crossing the Maize Beck more difficult and ended with a long detour upstream looking for a crossing point and eventually finding a footbridge. The ascent alongside the boundary fence proved to be quite a slog but we were rewarded with magnificent views all around at the top. Although access days are limited we saw no one else on the hill. | Newton Maximus | 25/08/2018 |
| From 392 track end above Grains o th Beck. Easy if a little long walk along track then 4x4 path to summit. Sunny day. Warcop site very helpful to access days and phone line. The from this direction you only just cross into MOD land. | N.Morters | 04/08/2018 |
| From Cow Green. Permit from MOD. | solitaryfellwanderer | 07/07/2018 |
| Murton Fell - Mickle Fell - Little Fell - Long Fell - Tinside Rigg. | tomd4 | 05/05/2018 |
| Parked at boundary wall between Cumbria and county Durham. Followed the wall all the way to Plateau then walked to the carn summit. Return via trig and then on track down to a bridge then cross country to boundary fence and back to the car | jmistry86 | 01/04/2018 |
| With K and RM with a permit. Usual route from cattle grid to the south. Harder work than anticipated. Snow on the summit and above average visibility. | Ashley | 01/04/2018 |
| From Langdon Beck YH, hired for Richard's birthday. Snowy ascent via impressive Cauldron Snout , and an interesting crossing of Maize brook in large ( declining) group; also visited trig. inevitable icy descent in darkness. Great day followed by roast pork dinner. Second ascent. | Denise | 03/02/2018 |
| For
Richard M s birthday - a large group of 10/20 from Langdon Beck taking advantage of a military free day. Mist and
Lots of snow. | davechaffey | 03/02/2018 |
| Richard M's birthday weekend. Langdon Beck YH via impressive Cauldron Snout then up from Cow Green Reservoir, river crossing then followed fence up to ridge. Along to trig point, descent via Silverband shop, track over High Hurst and skirted round Noon Hill to bridge near Cronkley.
Bad visibility but fun in the snow and with excellent company! | zoob | 03/02/2018 |
| An opportunist ascent from Langdon Beck YHA on realising this was one of the few non firing weekends. A great route past the impressive Cauldron Snout before interesting crossing of the Maize Beck and plod through deepening snow along the fence line to summit plateau. Snow, bright misty cloud but no wind. Visited trig point before descending. A great day out. | RichardM | 03/02/2018 |
| Full soft snow cover. Sunny. From south followed fence. Compleated all 445 Nuttalls. | Hammy | 27/12/2017 |
| Permit from MOD þo bag Mickle Fell. Great day. Parked at Cow Green cp and cycled to Moss Shop mine ruin via Cow Green Dam and Birkdale farm. Bridleway beyond ruin unrideable. Followed b/w to county boundry fence and followed to edge of summit plateau. Easy going to summit. Beutiful autumn day, cold and clear, great views to the Lakes, Cross Fell and NY Moors. Back same way to visit Widdybank Fell and Viewing Hill | John Lee | 04/11/2017 |
| With E. MOD Access Land open day. From small car park by cattle grid on B6276 (NY8317919943). Up by fence via Hewits and Hanging Seal. Wet, low cloud and boggy ground made this a slog to the summit. Then onto trig point and return via track past High Crag, White Band, Fish Lake, Grains o' th' Beck and B road. | Beeliner | 07/10/2017 |
| With Katy (and permit)Very Hard Wet Day. | George Thompson | 06/08/2017 |
| A fabulous walk using Alan's route, from the track starting above Grains o'the Beck, and going past Fish Lake and Close House over wide open grassy, rushy moors. Curiosity corner: the MOD area contains a newly creosoted hut with a porta pottie. Are the squaddies going soft, or is this for the grouse shooters? Heather moor above this, in full flower, and then the first view of the long grassy summit ridge/plateau of Mickle Fell. The track goes almost to the ridge, but it's a fine walk nonetheless. The walk along the ridge is very enjoyable, easy dry going on a grassy ATV track, with wonderful views all the way. It's good to walk right to the end of the ridge for a great view from Little Fell to Cross Fell, and the Lakes beyond. Possibly one of the best Pennine hills? | Gill | 05/08/2017 |
| A bit of a slog on Southern route. Fortunately little rain. | Isambard | 29/07/2017 |
| From the east of Grains o' th' Beck on B6276 at start of track. Met 2 gamekeepers during the course of the walk who were both very friendly. Great walk of 12 1/2 miles and the low cloud cleared up as the walk went along. | Alan Caine | 01/07/2017 |
| With Graham, Tove, Andrew and Steve. From Hilton via Long Fell, Tineside Rigg and Little Fell. | ruthatlast | 01/07/2017 |
| From Cow Green via fence on N side; late start so I went on the fell after the firing finishes (1300 hrs on Su). Landrover tracks etc within ca. 100 m E of fence all the way and very obviously along the summit ridge which is largely stony grassy and good going. Had it to myself, cloud on and off top, E wind. Down more directly to Birkdale, via Greenmines Hush, a pleasant way. I note good tracks from near Birkdale go to 600 m (map) on Meldon Hill which would allow that hill to be climbed while waiting for the guns to fall silent. With the gentians out at Cow Green, this was a good day and I won't join Mickle Fell's detractors. Good to get on Yorkshire's highest summit, 44 years after climbing my first. Exceptionally dry underfoot. PS- no sign of any military debris- do the MOD ever use the area E of the fence? | pwheeler | 07/05/2017 |
| ACW circuit starting at NY846203. A grassy hill on top, some heather lower down. Summit area quite busy today - several people - bit of a culture shock, expecting (as previous visits), to be alone.
I think I am right in saying that Mickle Fell is the highest hill in England outside Cumbria & The Cheviots- also is Co Durham's 'English Corbett'. | ger | 30/04/2017 |
| As per the Nutall route, so climbed after little fell and before Meldon Hill. Long, but brilliant day out | dianepick | 30/04/2017 |
| with the aid of a MOD permit and from the Cattle Grid on Brough to Middleton-in-Teesdale road. Very boggy ground and much covered in snow which also fell during ascent. Hard work! | IanHHill | 04/02/2017 |
| Obtained permit. With Stephen. Parked in a small lay-by nr Brough on the Cumbria, Durham border. | ADT | 02/10/2016 |
| Walked up from the Brough Road with a bunch of cachers and our permit holder. A bit of a boggy slog if I'm honest but at least the clouds lifted for about 10 minutes while we were on the top. | Walker Dan | 28/08/2016 |
| From Little Fell as per Nuttall's route (almost anyway). The GR seems to be what may once have been a cairn but not the little cairn you might think. | clivevilla | 06/08/2016 |
| Slightly annoying official North Route with permit. Not really possible to phone guard room in a dip in a middle of the moor...with M | Danmawr | 06/08/2016 |
| Walked from Hilton. Fine and breezy. A great mountain with a unmissable summit cairn unlike Little Fell. Be aware that this is on M.O.D. land and access is only given on certain weekends. | flockwatcher | 06/08/2016 |
| MC | Martin66 | 19/07/2016 |
| 1/7 First of seven (Mickle Fell/Boldon Hills/Strawberry Hill/Rombold's Moor (Ilkey Moor)/Weets Top/Abbot Hills/Black Hill) Long 4 hour slog through rain for this one. | Fergalh | 09/07/2016 |
| Route 9.4 from the Nuttall's book. Had a permit but no phone signal so didn't ring the guard room. Little Fell was reasonably straightforward and the route to Mickle Fell was fairly easy as long as you follow the Nuttall's directions and stick to the quad bike tracks. After this though it gets pretty hard and you're up to your ankles in heather most of the way to Murton Fell. Didn't see a soul all day. The only shell casings I saw were from grouse shooting. Pretty wet, cloudy and windy all day. | tsharp | 09/07/2016 |
| south route, clear day, easy 5hr walk up and down. Top of cairn seems to be higher than officisl high point. With Caroline & Matt. | keithelliott | 04/07/2016 |
