Two members of congress are voicing their support for medical cannabis in Kentucky.
Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, D-Kentucky, took to Twitter to reveal that U.S. Senator Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, and U.S. Representative Thomas Massie, R-Garrison, announced their support for the measure after receiving letters from Kentucky Senator Albert Robinson, R-London.
“I believe decisions on how to regulate cannabis should be left to state governments. I support legislation currently in effect that prohibits the DOJ from spending any money to interfere with state medical cannabis laws. I will continue to work to make sure the federal government respects federalism and does not interfere with such state decisions.” Senator Paul said in a statement.
Rep. Massie released a similar response to the letter from state Senator Robinson.
“Pursuant to the U.S. Constitution, decisions regarding the regulation of cannabis are properly left to state governments. In addition, the majority of Americans support allowing the use of medical cannabis. I fully support House Bill 166, and have co-sponsored bills in Congress that would prevent the federal prosecution of any person who acts in compliance with state laws relating to cannabis for medical or other purposes.” his letter to the Sen. Robinson read.
These letters come after House Bill 166 was tabled last week, after days of discussion over the matter. State Rep. Jason Nemes, R-Louisville, moved to pass on a vote Thursday in order to make changes to parts of the measure. Supporters of the measure, including Secretary Grimes are concerned, the pass over may cause the bill to die.
Grimes has been active on social media highlighting supporters from throughout the state. Medical cannabis measures have failed in the past.
