К разработке конструкторской документации привлекались специалисты ОАО «ЭМЗ им. В.М. Мясищева». Аналогичная модернизация планируется и для самолетов-топливозаправщиков Ил-78М. Обновленный самолет получит наименование Ил-78М-2.
