A drainage basin is an area that drains all precipitation received as a runoff or base flow (groundwater sources) into a particular river or set of rivers. Canada’s major drainage regions are the Atlantic Ocean, Hudson Bay, Arctic Ocean, Pacific Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. Rivers are organized into networks, each with its own recharge area upstream, and drainage channel and mouth downstream. Networks are ordered from ocean to main river to secondary rivers to streams which correspond to ocean basins, river basins, sub-basins, sub-sub-basins, and so forth. The boundary of a watershed is called a drainage divide.

The map was originally published online in the Atlas of Canada, 6th Edition as an interactive digital map derived from a shapefile and mapped online using MapServer, a platform for publishing spatial data to the web. In order to preserve the geographical content of this Edition during its publication from 1999 to 2009 all the maps have been converted from their online interactive form to a raster and made available in PDF and JPEG.

As this map was originally published as an interactive map in the online Atlas of Canada, 6th Edition (1999-2009), it was not intended for high resolution reproduction and therefore does not conform to the standards of cartographic representation and map design found on the Atlas of Canada’s paper reference maps. Map Text (s): Each map published in the online Atlas of Canada, 6th Edition was accompanied by text to describe the map. The map text (s) have been archived in PDF/A and html. Although the design and layout of the text have been modified from the original html, the actual content has been preserved unchanged from the original. In the table of contents of the online 6th Edtion, maps were published within the context of a topic and subtopic. In some cases maps were embedded within a sub-subtopic. These texts have been made available with the map text. The map abstract in the archived map text, will not necessarily match the same text on the archived map as in some cases the abstract has been reworded to apply to an archived map that has been deconstructed from the original by separating out the various map layers of one map into individual maps. Or alternatively, some maps mapped at two base scales (1: 7 500 000 and 1: 1 000 000) have been archived into 2 maps as they would have shown different information (or more detailed information) online at each scale in the original map. The original texts (s) were written for the original map, and not the component maps deconstructed from the original, which is why the title on the archived map text will reference the original map title as published. Animation: All animation(s) referenced in a text are located separately from the text and are identified with the extension '_animation'. To view the animation(s) open in a Web browser.
