Germany and France confirmed their presence in the Women's Olympic Football Tournament at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympics as two of the best European teams in the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015™. Germany had missed the last edition in London 2012, while France were beaten by Canada in the bronze medal match.
Canada 2015 serves as the qualification for Rio 2016 where the top three European teams will qualify for next summer's showcase. With Norway's loss to England in the Round of 16, Germany and France have confirmed their place as two of the top teams.
The Netherlands could join the duo at the Olympics if the Oranje can defeat Japan in their Round of 16 match on Tuesday. In the event where results from the Women's World Cup do not clearly identify the third best team from Europe, a play-off with the two remaining teams (in this instance Netherlands and Norway) will take place, which will be organised by UEFA.
Note: England do not participate in the Olympics, rather the United Kingdom competes at the Summer and Winter Games, so the Three Lionesses do not count in the qualification rankings for Rio 2016.
