Shakhtar Donetsk would be contenders for the Bundesliga title if they played in Germany, says Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola.

The tie is 0-0 on aggregate ahead of Wednesday's Champions League last-16 second leg in Munich.

"I'm certain they'd be title candidates here," said Guardiola of the Ukarine side. "It will be a major problem if we do not reach the quarter-finals.

"I am a young coach but I know what to expect."

The former Barcelona boss led Bayern to the domestic double in his first season in charge of Bayern, with his side nine points clear in the league in this current campaign.

The five-time European Cup winners last won the trophy in 2013 and were runners-up in 2012 and 2010. They are bidding to reach their eighth quarter-final in the last 11 seasons.

Captain Philipp Lahm is unlikely to make his comeback from a broken ankle. Former Real Madrid and Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso serves a one-match ban, and Thiago and Javi Martinez are sidelined with injury

The only time Bayern were eliminated from a European competition after drawing the first leg away 0-0 was in 1981 against Liverpool, having been successful on the other five occasions.

This is Shakhtar's third appearance in the round of 16 - all in the last five campaigns - although they have only once progressed past this round, when they made the quarter-finals in 2011.

Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu told Uefa.com:  "In my opinion Bayern are the world's strongest football team at the moment.

"They have an advantage on us. Their team is also superior to ours, but football does not follow logical rules. In football, anything can happen."
