Metroid II Fan Remake Shows Off Its Latest Screenshots

By Ishaan . December 26, 2014 . 11:00am

Another Metroid 2 Remake (AM2R), which is the most well-known fan remake of Metroid II at this point, is coming along nicely. Earlier in the year, the entire game was ported into GameMaker: Studio, resulting in better performance and other improvements. Now, in his latest update, the game’s developer has shared a few new screenshots.

The most drastic improvement in the latest build of the game is to Area 4, which now uses a brand new custom tileset, giving it more personality. Additionally, Samus’ Power Bomb animation is currently being tweaked as well. In addition, the game is receiving a new, original area, called Area 5, which will be shown off at a later date.

You can view screenshots from AM2R’s latest build below.

    How long till C&D?

    • Tom_Phoenix

Actually, as long as the creator doesn’t try to sell it, it’s unlikely to get hit by a C&D letter. For all their flaws, Nintendo tends to be on the level when it comes to fan projects like this.

Plus, this project has been well known for a while now. If Nintendo had the intent of sending a C&D letter, they probably would have done so by now.

    • Ni ~Algidus~

don’t even joke about that. the of AMR2 is amazing and I keep replaying it every month since last year waiting for the day the project is complete and can play the full game

    • J-Boogie

Sorry man, Nintendo officially gave the okay to use their IPs for fan projects.

Why sorry? That’s the best news I’ve heard ever!

  • Ben Sylvia

Just reminds me I wish they’d officially remake this game. Zero Mission was amazing.

    • DanijoEX ♬ the Cosmic Owltron

      Same here.

  • Souffrir

What it actually says: “Samus’ [sic] Power Bomb animation”

What I initially read it as: “Samus’ [sic] Power Boob animation”

    • ndjn3979

I like the way you think my friend

  • DanijoEX ♬ the Cosmic Owltron

    Lookin’ good.

  • Logan Moll

All the 2d Metroid games will now be awesome (because the original Metroid II didn’t age well at all…)

  • Josh Asher

Pretty sad when the fans have to take over for Nintendo’s defunct series

(yes I realize there are quite possibly 1 or 2 Metroids in dev right now for Wii U and 3DS, doesn’t change the fact it’s now been almost 5 years since the last release Other M which was mediocre anyway)

    • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

That is still shorter wait compared to Super -> Prime.

    • GH56734

A Western- developed Metroid 3DS game was cancelled in favor of Luigi Mansion 2. The series was still considered for at least 2012. If you want to talk about defunct series, you have lots of other better examples

      • British_Otaku

        Like F-Zero. >_>
Like Kuronoa said, this is far from the longest wait the series has had as well.

        • Yatol Charles

          or starfox

      • Josh Asher

Lol, a Metroid game getting cancelled in favor of yet another Mario Bros. game just further enhances my point, not takes away from it

        • Aaron K Stone

Calling Luigis Mansion yet another Mario Bros game when. A. You don’t play as Mario or see him until the end. B. Plays nothing like a Mario Game. Try again please.

          • Guest

I said Mario Bros. game. It’s in the Mario universe. It’s Mario’s brother. There are already a bajillion Mario games. Try again please.

          • Josh Asher

It’s a Mario BROS. game. Meaning it’s in the Mario universe. You play as Mario’s brother. Close enough. So yeah, keep being a fanboy and defending this crap

  • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

They already fixed the top problem I had with the game, the large sprites small screen that caused blind jumps and attacks. That said, I liked the original version very much still.

  • http://digitalconfederacy.com/forums/ FlyByNight

I’m glad somebody still cares and likes the series. Fucking Nintendo abandoned it after Other M.

    • Buretsu

Because Other M was a pile of shit and everybody hates it.

      • http://digitalconfederacy.com/forums/ FlyByNight

That is exactly what my comment meant.

      • 愛憎

Y’know, I was playing Other M the other night, and I was thinking “Maybe people just hate it that haven’t played it.”

As I continued, I recognized how poor the game’s conveyance is, along with other glaring issues. It really isn’t a good game, unfortunately.

        • DS23

Nope! Played, went ew, wandered off.

        • Christopher C

the combat really urked me as the only effective way to kill things were to charge and hop on an enemy. Not to mention the max charge time, with all the tanks should have been the DEFAULT charge time. Samus has never been so weak in the series either.

She also should’ve just given Adam the “F U” sign from the start. Story was meh, internal monologues and the voice were fine though. I liked how Metroid fusion was done.

      • Γεώργιος Αρχαιοκαπηλίδης

Don’t group any person who played it with you. It’s so immature. I also don’t like but not to the point to say nonsense like that.

    • Lilburrito

Stop over dramatizing this. It’s only been 4 years since the Other M. Nintendo wouldn’t abandon Metroid over one game. :/

Just give them some time, we’ll see something soon enough.

      • http://digitalconfederacy.com/forums/ FlyByNight

Well it has been 4 years!

        • Christopher C

I think either super metroid or metroid 2 was like 8 years.

          • http://digitalconfederacy.com/forums/ FlyByNight

That was back in the days though. Now we’ll be lucky to have one during the WiiU lifetime.

          • Christopher C

put a bet towards the end. When the series was doing well the games were still about every 3 years, and after a bad game Nintendo would need to come up with something better than usual. Also they take a LONG time on much needed games. Look at majora!

        • Lilburrito

Smash Bros Brawl released in 08, it took 6 years for the next game to come with it being announced on the 5th year.

          • http://digitalconfederacy.com/forums/ FlyByNight

Smash Bros is a sure thing though.

          • Lilburrito

And what makes Metroid “not a sure thing”? Sure it may be a lot less popular than Smash Bros, but it’s STILL a well loved and respected series that is constantly promoted through Smash Bros ( Along with all the other not as well known series ). Not to mention the fact that it has had quite a few more games in the last 15 years than Smash Bros has had.

          • http://digitalconfederacy.com/forums/ FlyByNight

…Nintendo doesn’t care much for Metroid. They haven’t for the longest time. Nintendo is all about loving Zelda, Mario and Pokemon because $$$. This pretty much sums up things. http://i.imgur.com/c8EWGLa.jpg (it was 2011 I know but still…)

          • Lilburrito

No, it really doesn’t. You’re making it very hard for me to believe that you “are not” operating on some sort of incredibly biased assumption. Metroid has clearly received a lot more love than some of franchises that have recently returned and/or have been present all the time. Do you know how long it took to get a “proper” Donkey Kong game? Yoshi has had to wait “8 years” from 06 until his next game came out for the 3DS. Do you even want me to get started on the amazing Sin and Punishment 2? Or Star Fox for that matter? It wasn’t even guaranteed that we’d get a Luigi’s mansion sequel and that took a decade!

And for your information, Zelda, Mario and Pokemon are all handled by the studios/people that “don’t” deal with Metroid.

          • http://digitalconfederacy.com/forums/ FlyByNight

…No offense but my head hurt after reading that. I have no idea how you are unable to grasp that Nintendo treats their IP’s poorly outside Mario, Zelda and Pokemon. (revenue and funds) This is an established fact.

          • Lilburrito

And I have absolutely no idea how this became an argument based on revenue and funds when we were talking about the “supposed abandonment” of a what is still a well respected I.P.

It’s obvious that the top sellers would get more attention/priority, that’s how the industry works. I’m not going to deny that Nintendo doesn’t do that. But that certainly does not equate “abandoning” Metroid. From Super Metroid to Metroid Prime, it took “8″ years for that game to come. The other I.Ps made their jump to 3D since 1996 but Metroid didn’t get it til 2002. It shows where their priorities are but it sure as heck doesn’t say abandonment.

Guess what, Sin and Punishment is going to have its 15th Anniversary next year. Mach Rider is going to have its 30th, Mother’s 25th Anniversary was this year, they may not be making new games or so celebrate that but they’ve shown more than well enough that they haven’t forgotten those I.P’s. The same applies to F-Zero and Excitebike’s presence in Mario Kart 8. If that still equates abandonment in your book then I see no point in continuing this discussion.

          • http://digitalconfederacy.com/forums/ FlyByNight

Sin and Punishment has had only two games and is not a Nintendo Nes Classic. Neither is F-Zero and Mother WAS NEVER PRESENT WORLDWIDE ONLY IN JAPAN. Metroid is Nintendo’s Megaman sadly. The way Other M was handled tells us that.

          • Lilburrito

No, it is not an NES Classic but it’s still considered a classic nonetheless, the same applies to F-Zero and so too does it apply to Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii. You’re clearly not familiar with the Mother series and its following if you’re willing to say something like that.

So being handled by one of the “creators” of Metroid to flesh out our favorite bounty hunter whilst being developed in collaboration with the people behind what is often considered to be the greatest action adventure game is implying it was handled badly? The result may have been lackluster but are you honestly disregarding an honest effort made by veterans of the industry? I’m by no means calling it an “uber spectacular game”, it is obviously marred by poor design choices but the people behind are notable.

          • http://digitalconfederacy.com/forums/ FlyByNight

…Xenoblade Chronicles is not a classic. It is barely a decent RPG as it is. Mother is a cult classic at best in the States and is more of a Japanese thing. I was talking about the series that made Nintendo here. But ok…

          • Lilburrito

            *Sigh*

You know what? Let’s just stop. You clearly don’t plan on budging no matter what I say. So instead of typing some sort of 700 word essay, I’ll just say I believe you’re wrong and call it a day.

Have a good new year bud.

          • Justin Graham

My god, you are hard-headed. I’d step in to argue here, but you’re so deadset on ignoring every point to maintain your obliviousness that it would be pointless to do so.

Plugging your ears and screaming about how wrong everyone is while asserting your personal beliefs as fact is the absolute worst way to debate with anyone.

          • http://digitalconfederacy.com/forums/ FlyByNight

“My god, you are hard-headed. I’d step in to argue here”
But I’ll just insult you without bringing anything to the table? Yeah that is way better!

          • http://digitalconfederacy.com/forums/ FlyByNight

Sales sadly./ Metroid has been around for 25+years so I’d hope there’d be more games! LOL! No anniversary either. You guys are quite thick or just don’t want to see how things are regarding Nintendo and their ips.

      • Theofratus ‘Geese’ Lester

“Nintendo wouldn’t abandon Metroid over one game.”

        F-Zero on the other hand…

        • Lilburrito

Without a doubt, I’m sure they’ll also get to F-Zero eventually! Just as they did with Star Fox. Just as they did with Kid Icarus as well.

Who knows, it may be a lot closer than we think. F-Zero GX was developed by one of Sega’s studios wasn’t it? Seeing as how the big N is trying to do more crossovers/collaborations as of late, it wouldn’t surprise me if a new F-Zero sprung about.

          • Theofratus ‘Geese’ Lester

Let’s pray they’ll make some announcement by next year’s E3.

Or even a Wii U version of Punch-Out, to boot.

          • Lilburrito

They’ve been placed in a situation in which barley any third party company is willing to help. From what I can tell, they plan to uphold the Wii U solely through their first party/exclusive offerings. With that said, Nintendo is definitely not “sequel savvy” like others. So this leads me to believe two things.

            1. We will see more new I.P’s like Splatoon.

            2. We’ll see quite a few old I.P’s revisited/resurrected.

    • Christopher C

How often do the games release? EVERY FEW YEARS… the release dates can be pretty staggered. I looked it up and metroid fusion was 8 years.

    • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

It’s already been mentioned that they’re at least in the planning stages of something. (Wasn’t it planning?)

At the very least, someone there is thinking about it and how to go forward with the series. Give them time. Even a (completely) new gen Pokemon comes out only so often. If anything, it’s just disappointing that Metroid doesn’t get spin-off titles to fill in the gaps.

  • Noelemahc

I’d rather see Nintendo make a Metroid 5 rather than a remake of Metroid II. Then again… Any 2D Metroid would be welcome at this point.

    • Badouken

This !!! Thank you!!! We need a Metroid 5. I actually mentioned this awhile ago and had some “Metroid fans” tell me how Metroid games havent been number since 2 so making a Metroid 5 would be dumb… how little they knew… anyhow we need a follow up to fusion!!!

  • Christopher C

This looks really good, last time I check on it was like 10 some odd years ago and there were like no updates so I thought it was abandoned.

  • Γεώργιος Αρχαιοκαπηλίδης

Seriously Nintendo! Just hire them and release it for 3DS!
