US sends experts to study Nigeria’s anti-Ebola strategies

The United States’ Center for Disease Control and Prevention is impressed by the effective methods Nigeria has employed to contain Ebola.

Following the discovery of the first case of Ebola Virus diagnosed in the United States, the CDC has sent its staff to study how Nigeria contained the deadly disease.

A statement released by CDC Director Tom Frieden stated that Nigeria’s “extensive response to a single case of Ebola shows that control is possible with rapid, focused interventions.” In addition to visiting Nigeria, CDC officials will also visit Senegal to study its containment model.

“The best practices in Nigeria and Senegal suggest the US should monitor all individuals who may have been exposed to Ebola and establish a dedicated management and response system,” Frieden said.

  • Adrian Kapoor

At least the Yanks are humble enough to admit that there are one or two things that they can learn from Nigeria as they seek to contain the ebola disease that another bad Liberian boy brought into their shores. “Learn of me….for I am meek and lowly of heart…then you can find rest for your souls…”

    • Eyen Akwa Abasi

Something good can come out from Africa and Nigeria specifically.
The Super Eagle of Africa is ready to fly high without being compelled to do so. Together, we shall solve our myriad problems if we deliberately focus on those good things that unite us rather than those selfish and tribo-religous philosophy and negative sensor or criticism/practice that aim to divide us. United, we shall contain and defeat terrorism. Together, we can defeat unemployment with it attendant poverty. Together we shall change the nation. Together, we can save the world!

      • saleh

@ Eyen Akwa Abasi thank u for ur BELIEVING in the Nigeria dream

      • Eyen Akwa Abasi

Some day, the super powers will be begging us to assist them medically. Optimism, faith with work and equal right are tripod that makes a nation great and a great nation greater. I believe that Nigeria shall become greater. I believe that a time will come when excellent medical care will be affordable to all and sundry within this nation, when the rich and mighty will obtain their health and medical services in our land. That time will soon come if our leaders resolve to harness our human capital and invest in the health sector. Though unemployed and can’t pay my bills, I still believe in Nigeria dream because I have no other country…

Can anything good come out of Nazareth

    • Asuquo Affiah

This has proved that no one is a write off We have been told by everybody including ourselves that we are no good but this has obviously shown that it is not true. Now is the time for us to start believing in ourselves, working harder and trusting God to take us to the next level. We should also support our president in his quest to better thiscountry

  • timo

A clear signal that if ALL things are put in place and in order , Nigeria has what it takes Medically, to take the leading role in tackling health issues, with better working Conditions
A clear message to selfish , arrogant politicians who will whisk themselves abroad for the slightest headache as if healing angels are going to treat them there while withholding the salaries and allowances of their medical staff at home.
Sad to note that the volunteer that worked during the critical time of Ebola has not been paid their allowances
One thing I believe is this “they” and their generations will reap whatsoever “they” sow

  • obinkwo

Kudos to my able President GEJ, Governors Fashola of Lagos and Rotimi Amechi of Rivers. Although we may be divided in our views but always allow strong ideas and actions to be supreme like in this case of Ebola virus handling in our dear country Nigeria. Long live Nigeria and good luck to America!!!

    • Sim chukk

America should be stopped now! They brought this virus to us through Sawyer and thought our economy will crumble through it, but shame on them Nigeria has shown it’s bigger than US. Afterall, all their medical institutions are made of majority Nigerian Doctors and nurses. They want to know our strategy and if possible detonate another virus more deadly than Ebola, to force us to borrow from their world bank, to fund a new health policy and statement, and then end us up in debt. Ebola, HIV, bird flu…are all health policies meant to create an industry as HIV is big now and US making nearly 50% of generated fund.

      • James

“Nigeria has shown it’s bigger than US” LOL. Don’t be silly, please.

      • Emmy

He might be right you know..I guess he meant in some aspects like this one. lolxxx

      • Sim chukk

Please tell me, if we are not bigger (or better if you will) in this aspect how come they are coming to learn and tagging “study”. How ever you see it, I still believe my country is bigger than US in many aspects. For example, insurgency. If the kind we have in Nigeria hits US, they’ll call for allies to help them within. Nigeria is my father land and better than US!

      • Sim chukk

And you are retarded. People like u die as a result of glutton, because ur mother’s meal is never delicious to u. Long throat.

      • Chuck Sim

You are retarded. Glutton like you who thinks his mother’s soup is not delicious ends up praising another woman’s cooking. Long throat!!!!

    • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

If I was GEJ, I would look Obama and the US in the eyes right now; and without blinking, I’d ask them for arms and ammunitions in exchange for the privilege.

The request for the study is all about saving American lives, so is the need for weapons to save Nigerian lives from boko haram.

But hey, I am not GEJ, just another Nigerian and my country’s interest comes first!

      • Sim chukk

Na so my Bro. Our father land comes first. One love.

  • Rakota

Welldone Lagos State & Rivers State…the Governors show good leadership style in containing the disease

    • Aloy

APC Man, una nor go ever appreciate d appropriate quarters when things go right. BOKO HARAM FOR NORTHERN STATES, GEJ, KIDNAP OF CHIBOK GIRLS FOR BORNU, GEJ, EBOLA ENTER NAIJA, GEJ! Now Ebola succesfully contained, FASHOLA and AMECHI! May U continue to REMAIN BLIND WITH EYES WIDE OPEN IJN……

      • nigeriamail2

Aloy, I would not have bothered to comment on lowly intelligence betrayed by you but when you sign off with ‘IJN’, it is time to make exception.

What has ‘IJN’ got to do with the matter? What if the other person is also invoking the ‘IJN’ against you to? So you end up using the Lord’s name in….?

On another note, it would be better for you to recognise that the reason that FG even swung into action was the fear that Lagos State government would steal its thunder and it was bad enough that the state was seen as a shining example of relatively good governance.

I know because I am indirectly part of the government.

For example, if the FG were so altruistic as unfortunately ignoramuses like you think, then it would not need to be reminded that Dr Adadevoh deserved a medal. Because it was she and her immediate crew that effectively saved Nigeria the plague it faced.

There are some that will begin to opine that Nigeria was saved by TB Joshua, Adeboye, Oyedepo etc etc. There are those that will attribute the containment of EVD to all manner of concoction and so on but at the end of the day, certain factors were at play in getting us to where we are today. GEJ and FMH really do not deserve the main credit.

Another salient factor is that Nigerians fear death very much more than most and I can assure you that the same statistics would have played out in the case of HIV AIDs if you bother to research and test the hypothesis. This is the reason why Nigerians are where they are: hopeful for a better tomorrow even when stared with the abyss. This is the same flaw that causes us to fall time and time again for any scam in fashion. Religious zeal being one major one and political prostitution being another. For good measure, add kidnapping and money rituals.

So yes, it is arguable that we should blame the leader when things are wrong. Power is concentrated in Nigeria. Power is absolute in Nigeria. Power is mainly in PDP hands (and I do not give a monkey’s about APC anyway) but the buck stops at the top of that power chain. That power chain is occupied by GEJ. For who then shoul dwe hold responsible when the country is in the state it is in today? The bus driver?

My friend, you should consider using your brain cells a bit more.

      • mike anjorin

So Anonymous Man , “Using your Brain Cells u feel the Federal Govt, represented by Min of Health, Centre for disease Control and Management should not be praised along with Lagos and Rivers State for a job well done?, have u travelled by air during this period,? Pls use ur real name, thank you

      • nigeriamail2

Mike Anjorin. There is NO evidence that that is your real name as the same would hold if I called myself Ikenna Obi. Catch my drift? Stop chasing shadows and stick to the substantive issue at stake.

Now, my point was that we should give honour to whom it is due…in the right sequence and priority. It is silliness and obtuse responses like yours and your kind that choose to call a spade an earth moving instrument with a handle instead of a spade.

Like I stated, the FG would not have bothered but for the threat of losing face to the Lagos state government.

CDC is merely on a normal sensible fact finding visit. Civilised or organised establishments must engage in this way to improve their processes. That is their job.

Rather in Nigeria, the Mike Anjorins want the Nigeria Mails to praise mediocrity. You can dream on.

Nigeria is blessed with far too much and it is a crying shame that we have square pegs in round holes and cretin want me to praise them!?! Tufiakwa! Look around you again to see if but for crass mediocrity Nigeria should not be one of the greatest countries?

Mike Anjorin, before you respond from the (wrong) other side of the debate, use your mental faculties.

Thank God for social media though, I can maintain my guise whether you like it or not. After all you do not know what the likes of us go through every day to maintain liberties for you.

I work here in Abuja and close to the people that I would but for a wrecked civil service, resign tomorrow and contest against them. Nigeria’s future has been mortgaged by sick occupants of office in corridors of power, sicker than you can imagine. Worse still, many like you are in denial. Dream on.

      • Jay jay

Is it true that we are actaully rude people? We insult and degrade and divide each other over issues that should unite us. Just take a look at some comments and wonder how some people were raised to be so insultive and abusive. People please watch your words, you can express yourselves without degrading others with abusives words. It’s looks absurd

      • Nadeco

Aloy, you need to show some decency in the public, this barbaric behaviour should be dropped for you to be considered human being.

      • mike anjorin

        Hmmmmmm,

    • TheNigerian

You’re a very dishonest bigot. So the effort put by the FG via the Minister of Health come to naught in your empty god – forsaken mind?!

    • Tony

Na mumu dey worry you otherwise you wont write this sort of rubbish.

  • jay

THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED HAS BECOME THE CORNERSTONE . . .ALLELUYA

  • Olalekan Alausa

Pay back time! US denied Nigeria the use of Zmapp (or whatever they call it), now they want to understand how our health officials curtailed and treated EVD. US should help bring back our girls (as promised in May 2014) before the secrete is divulged.

    • TheNigerian

You got “the secret”? Divulge it right now.

    • chaiby

You are quite right when you said the world should place ban on Liberian travelers because it seems they are intentionally distributing the virus. When Sawyer brought it to us, the Liberian government official that gave him clean bill of health to travel to Nigeria boldly admitted that he has no regrets for allowing him come to Nigeria. Now another carrier intentionally brought it to America and the Liberia authorities are saying they will prosecute the guy. This is not hear say, I watched the news myself. They can only prosecute him if he is alive and within the short period he entered America, he had contacts with a large number of people including 5 school children, his immediate 4 family members are confined in their home with police guiding the house to make sure none of them escaped.

  • henry

    APC GOVERNORS weldone ooooh.

    • TheNigerian

So all the leadership shown by the Fed Minister of Health during the Ebola crisis comes to naught in your APC-bigotted mind?!

    • Ceejay

Nonsense. What has this got to do with political parties?

      • TheNigerian

Don’t mind these shameless, dishonest bigots!

  • ede

Watch them oo, they might decide to drop the virus here again. I strongly believe that these strange viruses are created by satanist and injected into animals in Africa and it spreads from there. They have access to Africa easily and when it spreads, they smile to the bank cos they make the vaccine.

  • larry

Give america agbo iba, agbo jedi and ewedu to cure their ebola problem.let not forget to the america question ; where is the zmapp? has it finished or not yet ready?God is more than american with their dirty dealing. they should look for the scientist that discovered it .where are their pentagon scientist ? are they dead? Obama is a disgrace to the entire black nations. It is high time for Nigeria to pay back, quarantine the america experts ,if positive send them back to their country.

    • Kay Soyemi (Esq.)

      lol, Larry.

You want to kill me with laughter?

      • larry

na so e go be na

  • Ceejay

Nigeria shine your eyes. I hope they are not coming to bring another “something”. They refused us the drug when we needed it.The way Ebola came to Nigeria looked to me like an “arrangee”. An American-Liberian who is an ECOWAS diplomat disregarded quarantine order in Liberia and travelled to Nigeria. By God’s grace he was stopped before he caused much damage. Then another ECOWAS diplomat disobeyed quarantine order in Lagos and took the virus to Rivers State. I smell conspiracy.

  • George

Check it out very well all states that experienced ebola was APC states greediness because of the expected N200,000 donation.

    God blessed GEJ

  • frog2222

I read somewhere that according to the CDC, some of those drugs only work on Whites! That explains why their sick doctors were able to recover… I’m not sure if this is true. Search the web.

I’m not sure if this guy is being humbled or just flattering us!

  • moses

All glory to God the giver of life wisdom know how and know why of Ebola containment in Nigeria. May his divine mercy and wisdom be extended to other countries under the scourge of Ebola and save our world from the scourge

  • moses

All glory to God the giver of life wisdom, know how and know why of Ebola containment in Nigeria. May his divine mercy and wisdom be extended to other countries under the scourge of Ebola and save our world from the scourge

  • icijackal

Are you sure it was not the prayers of Nigerians that stopped this deadly virus? Which president? Please give God the glory and not GEJ.

  • khumalo

Kodus to the head of LUTH in Lagos and the Minister of Heath, through their leadership expertise this Ebola virus was contanined. In God we take refuge.

  • 2cents_now

Teaching moments for everyone involved ; the US authorities humble themselves and their Nigerian counterparts have shown the world that Greatness is not the exclusive preserve of a ‘few’

    Just my 2cents

  • wares

Once again the USA want to fishing our technology,Nigeria and Senegal both are West African States should be applaud for a work well done, globally we are recognised once for something +ve,long live Nigeria! Long live Senegal!

  • APC = PDP =Yeye de smell

This is a good plus to Nigeria on international scene. At least we will not known as frausdsters,419ers,drug pushers, money laundering tacticians ,etc. Well-done GEJ, Fashola and Ameachi. No strings attached. Well done our able health workers.

  • tonbi

My Nigeria works when all play their part, this victory belongs to the people, our leaders provided leadership at the federal and states level and the people followed, that’s how a system works.

  • King Carlos

That’s the thing, with effective leadership, Nigeria will ve a great country that will be emulated world over. Thats why we need a change of government.

Credit belongs to the health workers and the Lagos state government.

  • King Carlos

And Maurice Iwu should thank his stars, because despite the atrocities he committed as the INEC chairman, he was part of the Nigerian officials that put ebola under control. What a good way to reclaim his integrity.

  • TY

Seems like a story framed up in the Nigeria news papers, i did not read it any news paper asides the ones in the country, not even on WHO news. Am sure our newspapers got this from our lying govt. They have come again with thr lies to boast.

  • Impeccable opexzy

Make sure they are screened so that they won’t come here and infect us …coz nowadays I don’t trust the usa…lols…good thing I like it….just joking

  • Omooba Adekunle Orafidiya

They can come and study how the party of Islamic fundamentalists, APC, refused to pay what is due to volunteers who risked their lives to curtail the spread of Ebola.

    • lekan

Kunle, please be positive for once!

      • Omooba Adekunle Orafidiya

My brother, is there anything one can be positive about in this our cursed country?

      • Adeola

Kunle this quite unbecoming. My country Nigeria is not cursed, if U’re cursed (for that is what u’re implying) no one can truly help u. sorry.

  • chaiby

I am glad my country has set a precedence which others world wide now like to follow. God is using this Ebola thing to prove certain points about Nigeria. Even when they refused to make the vaccine available to West Africa, except Canada who did not withhold theirs, God used our medical experts and government effort to contain Ebola and certify us free. I am proud to be a Nigerian. Long live Federal Republic of Nigeria.

  • bonifacejoe

Very good that the US sees something good in Nigeria. Actually, this is their habit. They are used to complimenting good things even the perfume you wear.Tell a Nigerian babe, oh gal you look nice, she will call you ‘ OLOSHI’.

  • newleaf

I guess we should also tell the USA to withdraw all their aid from Nigeria since we can now solve our own problems. Pride before fall

  • KpomKwem

Well done, Naija. Despite all the things going on in the country, we still have lots of potential to make it a great nation. The (questionable) death of the Boko Haram ringleader and the containment of Ebola are just the beginning!
Let’s all put our hands and heads together and make Nigeria the greatest nation there is!

  • Adeola

I am afraid Nigeria is a target. And all depends on time too. They need to come within this period so that if they are successful, they say Nigeria was never out of the woods. I am afraid a more virulent strain will be deposited. God forbid. Remember, Nigeria being the most populous Nation will be an easy market for their drugs which they have made in numbers. We need to be on guard. Anyone who is close to Government should please warn them. They should tell the American crew off somehow. Tell them we use Agbo or prayers or something like that. Anything to stop them from touching down on our soil. The virus is not yet airborne so it has to be brought in somehow. President GEJ and Co should not jubilate yet but they should really b on red Alert! I’ve said my piece o.

  • Adeola

Na wa for Punch o. What did u do with ma Posts?

  • Adeola

I smell rat though. I hope this is not a means of bringing a more
virulent strain into Nigeria, for if you have been closely monitoring
News on EBOLA outbreaks U’ll distinctly know that most Americans still
cant believe EBOLA infection is over in Nigeria and U could actually
feel their disappointment at the fact that Nigeria seems to be out of
the woods. I strongly believe they should not be allowed on our soil
under the pretense of learning how (God) we were able to contain the
outbreak for this I certainly perceive as dangerous. Too many evidence
show they dont really care about us!
