Monster mash Ramirez hits second-longest homer in Fenway historyUpdated: Saturday June 23, 2001 10:41 PM
BOSTON (AP) -- Boston's Manny Ramirez hit a pair of tape-measure solo homers, the second likely the second-longest by a Red Sox player in Fenway Park's history, in his first two at-bats Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Ramirez, who entered the game tied for the league lead at 21 homers, sent a drive that hit off a sign above the left-center field screen in his first at-bat in the first inning. It was estimated at 463 feet. He topped that in his second at-bat, leading off the third. On the first pitch from starter Chris Michalak, Ramirez hit a towering drive that carried into a lower row of lights on a tower high above the Green Monster. It took a while, but club officials estimated it at 501 feet. The longest homer in the history of Fenway Park, which opened in 1912, is believed to have been hit by Ted Williams off Detroit's Fred Hutchinson on June 9, 1946. The homer is marked by a lone red seat in the right-field bleachers 502 feet away, and is acknowledged because a fan claimed it landed on their straw hat 37 rows up. Ramirez's homer, though, is only estimated because it would have cleared the park. In his third at-bat with the bases load in the fourth and most of the crowd on its feet, reliever Robert File induced Ramirez's inning-ending fielder's choice grounder.
