First opened in 1894 as the Inn, its name was changed by Trinity College trustees in 1896 to Epworth using the name of the parish where John Wesley's father was minister in England.
The oldest and smallest residence hall on Duke's East Campus, Epworth is home to fifty residents. Epworth is co-ed, with males living on the second floor and female students living on the first. It is staffed by one Graduate Resident (shared with Aycock) and two Resident Assistants under the supervision of Residence Coordinator Kati Cadenhead.
Epworth is part of the East 2 Neighborhood along with Aycock, Giles, Jarvis, and Wilson residence halls.
Epworth has a full kitchen, laundry room, commons space, study room, and two outdoor patios. It is common to see Epworth students heading to the Marketplace together, hanging out on the balcony. The residents in Epworth quickly become like family and enjoy house cookouts or turning the residence hall into a haunted house for Halloween! The rooms are carpeted and there is are shared bathrooms on each floor (one for men, one for women). A small number of rooms are set up as suites and share a bathroom between rooms.
The Faculty-in-Residence Program is one of the ways in which Duke University seeks to facilitate, strengthen, and expand interaction between faculty members and undergraduates beyond the classroom.
