I could not agree more about support for S60 3Rd Edition. Microsoft needs to come out with a roadmap of what they plan on supporting. There are really TOO Few Symbian 5th Edition(S^1) phones that are out on the market to get much critical mass going. They
should support at least S60 3rd Edition FP1 (Feature Pack 1) and newer phones such as the E71 business phone (unless Silverlight has been tested on these and found to be underperforming). By the time that any critical mass happens on the S^1 and newer phones,
HTML5 and Flash are most likely going to have buried Silverlight.
I agree that E71is not as new as the E72 (or E73), but NONE of them are able to run Silverlight at this point.
Unfortunately, that is the point of this posting. Silverlight for Symbian is not available forE71, E72, OR E73 which are all Symbian S60 3rd Edition (FP1 or FP2 phones).
Silverlight has only been release for Symbian S60 5th Edition (same as Symbian S^1 Edition) based phones. As a result, there are VERY few Nokia (and really other manufacturers also) phones out there that can run Silverlight at this point. When the Nokia
N8 comes out in about a month, that will SHOULD support running this software. I would encourage Silverlight team to see what they can do to port Silverlight to Symbian for the older S60 3rd edition phones as there is a pretty wide install base of those phones.
If they fail to do that, then they will have to wait to build momentum in the mobile marketplace. That is something that I am not sure they can afford to do, but "whatever will be, will be"!
Microsoft has let Mobile slip past it in many ways over the last couple of years and are now trying to play catchup. They may be positioned to do something interesting in the next few months, but it seems as though they are not devoting the resources (in
numbers OR in quality) to deal with mobile. Microsoft should see Symbian/Nokia as a strategic alliance (i.e. Not Apple, Not Google, Not Blackberry) in the near term and throw their resources at them. Symbian/Nokia is not widely known in the U.S. anymore, but
it still is a pretty big player in the world (India, China , Europe). Symbian S60 3rd Edition platform would be a great way for Microsoft to get back into the game while they finalize Windows Mobile 7.
That's my 2 cents (maybe even less adjusted for inflaction) !
Doubt seriously if anyone is listening who matters, but there it is !
I totally agree with you. S60 3rd edition really has a great amount of users, silverlight should not miss that market.
Although apple does not like Flash, but we still have some "hack" solutions like utilizing svg & canvas in HTML 5.
Microsoft is really behind the trend, seems like losing the big market. It has to do something, like pushing silverlight to different main stream platforms.
I don't think that Microsoft is lack of intelligent workers, but rahter lack of attention to the end-user market.
