Pavel Bure Defends Anna Kurnikova’s Honor
The Taganka Court in Moscow ruled yesterday on the suit by hockey star Pavel Bure against the magazine Arbat Prestige Teleguide (published by Arbat Prestige and Co.). The case has been in court since the beginning of the year.
The hockey player sued the magazine over an article published last December 27 claiming that Bure “constantly boasts of his manly feats” and describing alleged intimate details of his relationship with tennis player Anna Kurnikova. Bure’s suit demanded that that information be declared unreliable, adding that the mention of his name “in that context damages his honor, dignity and business reputation.” He is also demanding 300 million rubles in compensation for the moral damage. In May, the court agreed to the petition of Bure’s lawyer Dmitry Ragulin to close the remaining hearings to the public. Ragulin explained at the time that he “had not received the permission of Pavel Vladimirovich [Bure] to discuss his private life.” The hearings were delayed several times due to technicalities. The court partially satisfied Bure’s demands yesterday, ordering the magazine to publish a retraction and to pay Bure 300,000 rubles in compensation. “That is a normal sum, fully corresponding to the filth they published,” Ragulin acknowledged. Bure told Kommersant that “The sum is not the main thing. It is the precedent when a publication is punished for unprofessional journalism.” At Arbat Prestige, Kommersant was told that they were “unprepared to comment.”
