    by Brendan Cole

After a tense and fairly even start, Ireland eventually went the way of Scotland, Italy and England; gradually succumbing to a Welsh team that was able to maintain a high standard throughout.

Worryingly, it seemed as though Ireland had completely run out of ideas by the end, and with only 6 visits to the Welsh '22 (compared to 31 going the other way) they never really threatened to score a try barring one exceptional Shane Horgan break.

  • 1: Marcus Horan

Didn't really show in open play, and the failure to establish the platforms in the driving maul and scrum (admittedly, the scrum improved once Wayne Barnes figured out that Wales were trying to get away with it rather than contest) is the responsibility of numbers one to five. As with the rest of the team, lacked bite.

Our Rating: 4 Average User Rating: 0
  • 2: Rory Best

One of only a few who really played at a level near the top of his own form, hitting his lineouts, albeit against a fairly poor Welsh defensive lineout, carrying the ball well, and showing up around the park.
Our Rating: 7 Average User Rating: 0
  • 3: John Hayes

Maul based gameplan made him a key man, but he couldn't get Ireland the go forward they had bet the house in in the driving maul. Disappointing.
Our Rating: 4 Average User Rating: 0
  • 4: Donncha O'Callaghan

Match that should have suited a brave, front foot player like O'Callaghan perfectly, but Ireland's fearful and negative mentality took the sting out of their forward play and ceded the initiative to Wales all over the field.

Our Rating: 5 Average User Rating: 0
  • 5: Paul O'Connell

Showed up here and there in contact, but, as with most of the other forwards, the gameplan didn't allow him to get into the game and make plays.
Our Rating: 6Average User Rating: 0
  • 6: Denis Leamy

Generally, Wales had no great difficulty matching Ireland in contact around the fringes. There were also some key errors, which made this a very poor outing for Leamy: the missed tackle on Ryan Jones was poor, but even worse was the ball ceded to a rip in the tackle by Gavin Henson, which yielded one of Ireland's sole pieces of decent go forward ball near the Welsh '22.
Our Rating: 3.5 Average User Rating: 0
  • 8: Jamie Heaslip

Ryan Jones had a fantastic day for Wales, and Heaslip will have learned a thing or two about the standard he needs to aim for to be one of the best in this competition. But at least he can play in such a way that those around him look like they might come into the match, and he nearly made a try for Ireland with one nicely timed break through the middle.

Our Rating: 5.5 Average User Rating: 0
  • 7: David Wallace

Almost no impact on the match, and Ireland's insipid inability to compete in the ruck must come under the microscope sooner rather than later. Generally, the Irish back row was totally outshone by a Welsh unit which can pass and link play as well as carry and tackle, and the sooner Ireland realise that this is a requirement, the better.
Our Rating: 4Average User Rating: 0
  • 9: Eoin Reddan

Poor day epitomised by that daft decision to tap the ball and then hoof it straight into touch in his own '22. In his defence, Ireland are about as fizzy as five day old Fanta left out in the sun these days, and there is precious little happening for him to try to create spark off.
Our Rating: 4.5 Average User Rating: 0
  • 10: Ronan O'Gara

Looked like he might steer Ireland to victory at one point, knocking lovely low kicks behind a Welsh defence that for a while seemed unable to deal with his accuracy. Faded from the game as Wales grew however, and when Ireland needed to start trying to play, they were not capable of shifting up through the gears.
Our Rating: 6Average User Rating: 0
  • 11: Tommy Bowe

Another who had very little impact on the game; could he have done more (i.e. tackled Williams and let Trimble cover the outside man?) in the situation that led to the Welsh try? Perhaps, although it must be said that Ireland's current defensive philosophy breeds indecision, and doesn't appear to encourage pro-activity.
Our Rating: 4.5 Average User Rating: 0
  • 12: Andrew Trimble

Played to all intents and purposes in the outside centre berth, and was pretty much ignored as an attacker by the Irish gameplan, one or two small interventions aside. Missed tackle on Williams was poor, although the little Welsh wizard has made fools of plenty bigger men before.
Our Rating: 5Average User Rating: 0
  • 13: Brian O'Driscoll

Unfortunate injury brings to an end a Six Nations that he has struggled to impact on, aside for some isolated moments of excellence against France. Ireland were outhit up the middle of the pitch in defence and attack.

Our Rating: 4.5Average User Rating: 0
  • 14: Shane Horgan

Some good interventions, including a brilliant break for the near try, and it is hard to fault him for not getting it down. Like Bowe, he was underused by an Irish team sent out to play ten man rugby.
Our Rating: 6 Average User Rating: 0
  • 15: Rob Kearney

Classy display that bodes very well for the future; in most other setups, he would now be seen as the man in possession, and full-back is obviously his best position. Excellent kicking, safety under the high ball, and desire to hurt Wales with ball in hand were highlights from perhaps the only player whose game was not infected by a fearful and timid gameplan.
Our Rating: 8 Average User Rating: 0
  • Bench Rating

Bernard Jackman's penalty was obviously a blow to Ireland, although had referee Barnes been in more forgiving mode he might have let it go and given a warning; Jackman had not, after all, been on the field long enough to absorb the ref's breakdown "do's and don'ts".

Generally, by the time the subs were brought in, the game had already entered a holding pattern, and they did not have the wherewithal to shake it free into being the kind of looser match Ireland needed at that point.

Our Rating: 4 Average User Rating: 0
  • Manager Rating: Eddie O'Sullivan

Put in place a gameplan that really ceded the initiative to Wales, and one that arguably Ireland were not capable of executing. Maul the ball from the lineout by all means, but why give up entirely on playing in the wide channels? Ireland's tight five is stronger than what Wales have, but not by that much, and with with good motivation Wales were able to do enough to gain parity. Elsewhere, where Wales had the edge, and Ireland were completely outplayed ('played' being the operative word).

Unusually, there was almost no evidence that the Irish coach had watched Wales and figured out ways to hurt them, aside from deciding to take them on in the tight. Wales played a very flat alignment at out-half and in the centres, something Ireland have a particular insight into having used it with almost no success up until quite recently. Where were the rushed up early hits? Why were Jones or Henson never stopped behind the gainline? Instead of being challenged, Wales were able to advance and pass the ball at 10 and 12 with very little opposition against a horribly passive Irish defence.

In the end, Ireland were mentally and tactically outdone, and it looks as if under this present regime they will struggle to ever have the means to beat either France or, when they have their tails up, Wales. Ireland have hit a huge flat spot in their development and changes are obviously needed; it is fair to ask if Eddie O'Sullivan is the man to make them, particularly on the back of a most un-O'Sullivan like performance in terms of the almost total lack of sophistication.
