Alamo City named bike-friendly city

San Antonio Business Journal

San Antonio has been designated as a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists.

“This award recognizes the significant progress San Antonio has made in creating a more bike-friendly and livable city,” Mayor Julián Castro says.

San Antonio is one of 18 communities across the nation receiving the bronze level designation and the only community in Texas. The city was evaluated on engineering; bicycle education; encouragement; evaluation and planning; and enforcement. In particular, San Antonio has been adding more bike lanes to public streets.

In a few short years, city officials say they have made strides with this form of alternative transportation.

“San Antonio has made great progress in this area,” says City Manager Sheryl Sculley. “We have enhanced our infrastructure and signage, implemented new bicycle legislation, launched a safety campaign and we continue to initiate projects that encourage San Antonians to ride bikes.”

San Antonio will be formally recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Community during the Pro Walk/Pro Bike Conference in Chattanooga, Tenn., this week.
