Kosovo PM: End to Parallel Structures

| 07 March 2008 |

Pristina _ The Kosovo Government will extend its authority over every inch of the country, vowed Prime Minister Hashim Thaci, speaking at Friday's government meeting.

"We will not tolerate any parallel institution on Kosovo's territory," said Thaci, referring to recent attempts by Belgrade to open Serbian governmental branches in the northern part of Kosovo.

Thaci told his cabinet ministers: "Pristina's government will be present with its authority all over the country".

Since February 17, when Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia, Belgrade's authorities have attempted to set up several offices to serve as governing bodies in the areas where Kosovo's ethnic Serb minority lives.

The Railways of Kosovo, which Serbian Railway officials claimed to have taken control of, were this week returned to the authority of the UN in Kosovo.

Both the Kosovo leadership and the international community dismissed any possibility of a partition of Kosovo, with the soon-to-be-deployed EU mission set to also exert authority over the unstable areas in the north.
