Sacramento Union buys content space in News & Review

The Sacramento Union, a politically conservative newspaper, has purchased two pages of paid advertising for 13 weeks in the liberal Sacramento News & Review.
The Union will run two pages of editorial content that's meant to "express solely the views of The Union to News & Review readers," a press release issued by both papers states.
"We have a responsibility to not just run our businesses, but also to ensure that different points of view are able to get their point out in a cost-effective way," News & Review publisher Jeff vonKaenel said. "I think that really comes to be tested when you have people that you frankly disagree with who want to get their point across."
The first edition of the Sacramento Union in its latest form, a free biweekly tabloid, published July 21. It replaces a short-lived glossy magazine version of the defunct Sacramento daily newspaper. The magazine lasted about seven months when it shut down in mid-2005. It popped up after a 10-year absence of the politically conservative newspaper.
"It is rare that a competing publication would allow such a different editorial view to be expressed in their pages," The Union publisher James Dutra said, in a prepared statement. "We applaud the publisher and staff of the Sacramento News & Review for thinking outside the box and having the courage of their convictions to print another opinion. May we all be so open-minded."
