ADVERTISEMENTS
The Transportation Security Administration wants to hire at least 50 part-time screeners at Portland International Airport between now and the end of the year.
Transportation Security Officers perform a variety of duties related to providing security and protection of air travelers, airports and aircraft. They are responsible for identifying dangerous objects in baggage, cargo and/or on passengers. They also have to prevent those objects from being transported onto aircraft.
To qualify, you must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. National. You also have to have a high school diploma or equivalent. You must speak English and pass a background check and a credit check.
Starting pay for screeners is $13.43 per hour plus medical benefits. At PDX, most part-time screeners work five hour shifts four days a week.
There will information forums on Nov. 17 at the Airport Sheridan to discuss the job and its requirements. The forums will be held at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Additional information about TSA and the Transportation Security Officer responsibilities can be found at www.tsa.gov
I think that it is good to see our government spending some money on protecting us.

Since when are employers entitled to do a credit check on employees, and how is this information used in the hiring process?
Who has been refused employment for their credit background?
There must be some assumptions being made based on this information? Does this mean the people Most in need of employment (those with high debt. bad credit etc) might be denied employment based on that information?

They do credit checks for the same reason police departments do them during the hiring process; they do them so people won't be so inclined to accept bribes if one is in debt. The military also does credit checks for similar reasons but they have to deal with the handling of top secret material, and if one is in high debt then they could accept bribes for said secret material.

Is this news or a job announcement? Is the Portland Tribune in the business of producing news or is it the hiring agency for the TSA?
The TSA only searches little old ladies that do not match any kind of profile. The TSA loves to run law enforcement officers through their search ringer.
The TSA is a pathetic joke, the Democrats super expensive answer to using "more government programs" to control the masses.

Wow...so many comments. At least TSA is getting the word out that jobs are available. Sounds like good work for a student needing a part time job with BENEFITS.
The only tool is the one who sits on his/her couch and complains about how their latte will be cold while waiting in line at the airport for TSA to help secure your safety, at least they try. Oh that's right that's government waste. Hmm...when was the last time you stood a watch to protect your neighbor? And sitting in Starbucks banging away at your computer, with steam covered windows doesn't qualify. Cheers

A part time well paying job with benefits. Sounds like a good opportunity for many. I wish I lived in Portland area. I'd sure apply. I work full time for half that and don't have benefits. Enough said.

Nice ad, is this the classified section? Hey Dale, if you're going to question people's intelligence better work on the spelling buddy! Remember the old saying: Better to have someone think you a fool, than open your mouth and remove all doubt.

I was turned down for a job because of my credit. The employer made the assumption I would not be satisfied with the starting salary.
Employers have been doing credit checks for some time now. I do not think it is right, as our financial responsibilities should not effect how we perform on a job. Until there is a law mandating such action as illegal, they have every right to do it.
Do you research before making such ignorant statements.

Is not it sad that the airports even need to employ these TSA Screeners, a part of the Homeland Security Agency. This is all thanks to what happened during the 9/11 event.
Do not get me wrong, I think the TSA positions are important and a good way to make some additional incomes.

again..Frank Lenzi is a tool...and to the person who responded "new jobs"...if this is news, where's all the stories running job ads from mcdonalds, taco bell, and walmart? The TSA needing screeners isn't a story...why they need them is...as in why they do a large hiring and training and then lose tons of staff

Hey anonymous insulter "".... Here's a shout out to you:
Frank Lenzi is probably one of the most hard-working and respectable news persons in the business. He knows what people care about and he's one of the best reporters in town. Calling him a tool only shows your lack of intelligence--and your lack of news judgement. TSA workers make headlines from time to time, and I guarantee you'll see other news outlets consider this as a story as we enter the holiday season and while there's still a war on terror in effect.
...What's your beef with Frank, anyway? Could it be that he won't need to apply for one of those TSA positions while perhaps you will? I don't think you'd pass the test in any case, for it does require some smarts.... Stop the hatin', hater. Get bent.

Your credit history says alot about a person. Not just
to creditors but yes potential employers. If you don't
take care of finances and eventually this leads to getting served on the job or worse garnished..guess what
people your employer takes the hit with the extra time
and money wasted to take care of "your" irresponsibilities.
Now for the pay....I live out of state but the hourly
wage is awesome. Even your McDonalds, Burger King's,
Taco Bells start double our minimum wage...think about it!!

Gee, maybe they should not have transfered 50 of the full time screeners the red state airports ~6 months ago... bad planning from the Homeland gang again.

Anyone who calls themselves a "journalist" and proceeds to regurgitate a press release without actually finding news within and expanding on that news is a tool. I don't have a problem with Frank as long as he doesn't take the easy way out. It's what we in the real Journalism world call "lazy."
